By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Ventura County and many businesses had been established including Jardine & Macdonald (later Jardine Matheson) which ran a ferry service from Santa Paula to San Pedro Bay; Waddell & Reed (later Wells Fargo Bank) which operated ferries from Ventura Harbor to Carpinteria; Beardsley Bros., Lumbermen (later Beardsley-Lumbright), Warehousemen (later United States Steel), Hoteliers (later Marriott International), etc.; all of whom took advantage of coastal shipping access and good soil for agriculture. By 1886, several large business districts had emerged with dozens of small shops dotting every inch of acreage within sight of either shoreline or harbor activity ashore or afloat. The development during this time was significant as businessmen looking forhensed connections with each other through trade, transportation routes westward along Interstate 5 and southward along State Route 101; opportunities opened up for expanding production by facilitating new markets; importation/export increased via steamships; telephone service became available making it easier for men working inland to communicate with those living outlying areas; various colleges developed campuses in Southern California including UCLA - one mile north of downtown Los Angeles - Mines Faculty College founded by dentist Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1887 nearby Yountville; USC founded by Erastus Pyle just north of downtown LA;; etc.). Significant landmarks occurred such as: First electric streetcar line laid down between Downtown Los Angeles and North Hollywood calling itself "The Boulevard Line" completed circa 1897 becoming part of Main Street Subway system operations following World War I followed by Second Street Subway connecting Downtown LA with South Gate Park Trafficway circa 1951 completing an already existing streetcar network that started before America entered World War I .

Calabasas was founded in 1879 by James C. White and his wife, Mary Ann. The first post office was established at Calabasas in 1881. The town's growth began with the establishment of a sawmill, followed by a flour mill and then a shoe factory. In 1902, the town had 1,000 residents and it became an incorporated city in 1923. By 1940, Calabasas had 5,000 residents and it became an independent city again on October 1, 1943. On November 8 of that year, the United States Army detonated an atomic bomb over Hiroshima which destroyed all but about 10% of the city's buildings including the mayor's house which remained standing until 1945. After Hiroshima, many people migrated to California due to economic reasons and Calabasas experienced rapid growth as its population increased from 3,500 to 100,000 citizens during the 1950s-1970s boom period when new businesses were established along with housing developments such as White Oaks Estates and Deer Park Village. However during this time period many homes were also replaced with high-rise apartments because of rising rents prices in Los Angeles County during this time period while also experiencing infrastructure problems such as inadequate water supplies orunsustainable streetlights that left neighborhoods without illumination at night often leading to crime rates increase throughout the 1970s-1980s
The town of Calabasas was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 17th century. The first European to visit what is now Calabasas was Soane de la Salle in 1642. In 1847, two brothers, John Sutter and James Irvine, founded the city of Ventura on land they had purchased from the Native Americans. California became a U.S. state in 1850 and Calabasas was incorporated as a city in 1855. The city has grown rapidly over the years and today is one of Southern California's most populous cities with a population of over 200,000 residents.
