Calabasas is a city located in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 81,546 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth most populous city in Los Angeles County and the most populous city in Orange County. The name "Calabasas" comes from two Spanish words: "calaca" meaning “oak” and "vasa" meaning “stream”. The first European to visit what is now Calabasas was Antonio de Meneses on October 24, 1769 while exploring Rancho Cucamonga Province. Calabasas is a town located in southeastern California, United States. The population was 16,839 at the 2010 census. Calabasas is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It has been a location for many years and is one of the most developed areas in the city. The first settlers arrived in 1848 and built their homes on or near what is now State Route 99W. The name "Calabasas" was given to this community by Captain Georgecalifornia from his ship Rattlesnake which anchored off shore during a gold rush in 1851-52. The early residents were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other crops until 1861 when they became Territorial Marines to help defend California against Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American War. The original post office was established in 1851 and changed its name to "Caldavista" in 1862 because of growing competition from nearby Rancho San Bernardino which had received its name from Colonel José Gabriel Vallejar y Mendoza (1801-1868), commander of an expedition that explored and charted the Channel Islands in 1826. In 1865, "Caldavista" became part of present day Calabasas when it amalgamated with neighboring Town of Mora to form the new City of Mora with a population of 6,000 citizens on November 14, 1865 One interesting note about Caldavista's early days is that no school buildings were constructed until after 1850 when land around town began to be developed for housing purposes In 1898, Caldavista joined with other towns along Mono Lake Valley to form Angeles County as part of another effort by Governor Edmund Gillem to reduce overcrowding within Los Angeles County due to arriving waves of immigrants during the late 1800s The annexation process took several years because there were many challenges associated with creating such large numbers of people within such tight boundaries including problems finding land suitable for farming and numerous surveys being done both before and after annexation In 1907-1908 twoGD/FHA approved subdivisions called North Park & Westchester Village resulted in increased demand for property while also contributing greatly towards increasing development opportunities throughout CALIFORNIA south side
The area now known as Calabasas was first inhabited by the Ohlone people. The first European to visit what is now Calabasas County was Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542. In 1769, Captain John Carew of the English East India Company established a small fort on the present-day site of Villa Park, California. The British built Fort Mather on San Gabriel Mission Road near present day Thousand Oaks in 1778. In 1821, Mexican General Manuel Micheltorena divided California into two parts, Alta California and Baja California, and Calabasas became part of Alta Californias portion. From 1836 to 1850, much of what is now Calabasas County was part of Grant Parish in Los Angeles County. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, most of southern California passed from the United States to Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On March 14, 1871, when Calabasa City became a part of Mexicali Municipality it joined with other municipalities in Mexicali Province to form the present-day Baja California Sur region within Mexican Federal District government
