Calabasas, California is a small city located in Inyo County in the western United States. It is the seat of county government and has a population of around 71,000 people as of 2010. The area that now makes up Calabasas was first occupied by the Kumeyaay tribe. The first European tosight this area was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 26, 1769 when he called it "Hacienda San Francisco". He named it Rancho Santa Fe del Cielo because it belonged to his patron saint, Franciscan friar Father Francisco Sanchez. The area became part of Mexico after independence from Spain in 1821 and was ceded to the United States in 1848. The first post office for Calabasas was established on February 14, 1860. It was moved to its current location in 1865 when the town site was donated by James W Grants who also founded Grant's Village nearby. Grantsville developed around the original post office but only lasted until 1915 when Calabasas incorporated as a town under state law. In 1958, a large fire destroyed most of downtown Calabasa killing four people and injuring over 20 others. This event remains the deadliest fire ever started within an urban area in California and made headlines all over America due to its severity and devastation. A new downtown development began construction immediately following the fire which included modern shopping malls, restaurants and other businesses that continue today as one of Southern California's largest metropolitan areas with over 10 million residents making it one of Los Angeles' five most populous cities combined according to 2016 census data . After years of planning and fundraising by local officials including then-Mayor Ed Lee (D) who helped lead efforts that raised $118 million for rebuilding Downtown Calabasa followed by Governor Jerry Brown (D), voter support culminated with Measure D being passed November 3rd 2008 giving city voters unprecedented authority to approve zoning changes for any purpose not inconsistent with public interest or economic development which led to redevelopment plans released early next year .
The first Europeans to arrive in the area were Spanish colonizers in the 16th century. The area became part of Mexican territory after the Mexican-American War, and was given to California by Mexico in 1848. In 1851, California adopted a new constitution, which granted all Californians the right to vote. The state also became a republic in 1849.
