Calabasas, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 57,889 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Los Angeles County. Calabasas is located on the eastern edge of the San Fernando Valley and has been home to various cultures and communities since its founding in 1853. The area that now makes up Calabasas was first populated by the Tongva people who arrived from Southern Mexico around 1650. In 1853, Colonel John Sutter started construction on what would become known as Sutter's Ranch and named it after himself. Today, much of Calabasas rests on his land which he donated to the government in 1864.
The first Europeans to visit Calabasas were the Spanish in 1802. The area was part of Captain Manuel Nieto's Rancho San Joaquin, which he grant to his son José María Cabrillo in 1776. Rancho San Joaquin included much of what is today southern California. In 1821, three years after Mexico acquired California, Governor Manuel Micheltorena designated the area east of the Presidio of Monterey as part of Alta California. In 1848, following Mexican independence from Spain, Santa Clara County was created from eastern Los Angeles County and parts of Orange and Riverside counties. The western edge of San Bernardino County lay just east of present-day Calabasas. In 1850, a land grant by President James K. Polk to Jens Jensen for 640 acres (2 km²) at what is now the corner of Stevenson Boulevard and Ball Road in central Calabasas was seen as an opportunity for development around what would become known as Jensen's Corner. Jensen began building homes on the lot in 1853 and named it "Jensenville". By 1860, he had developed 3 lots totaling 160 acres (65 km²). He donated one lot for school purposes near his home to initialize a public school district; this parcel became known as Pioneer Park and remains so today. In 1863–64, American Civil War veteran John Cranch purchased 320 acres (12 km²) northeast of present-day Calabasas along with other property adjacent to it in order to establish a country estate called Cranch Castle which became the basis for George Washington Carver's largest agricultural operation in America and one that helped make Carver wealthy beyond his dreams. After serving out his sentence at Terminal Island Prison on Angel Island between 1865 and 1870, Carver moved his operations into what is now downtown Los Angeles where he built a large house on some acreage that still stands today called Carver House (now renamed Pershing Square). After spending several years living thereabouts unsuccessfully trying to get government contracts done because no one wanted him there because agriculture wasn't yet big enough across all Of Southern California - including Pasadena - he finally got a contract from Sutter Land Company doing soil testing for their new production plant at Ortega Station about 25 miles north of LOS ANGELES northwest of Irvine - making him rich beyond anything ever imagined by anyone! A few hundred yards south-west along Stevenson Boulevard sits University Avenue which runs parallel to Central Avenue through Business District #1 – home or offices/ retail areas being located on levels beneath streets providing excellent air quality & moderate traffic density throughout day & night
