Calabasas, California is a city located in the northeastern corner of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 97,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater LA Area. The first permanent settlers in what would become Calabasas arrived in 1847 on horseback from Sacramento. They were men named John Sutter and his brother-in-law Jedediah Smith who had founded the town of Sacramento on an acorn lot near where today's Interstate 5 and First Street stand. The original post office was called "Hillsborough" because it was atop a hill near present day Hillcrest Avenue and Highway 99. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location on the proposed route for Southern Pacific Railroad's new line from downtown Los Angeles to San Francisco (then known as Alameda). In 1851, James Wolkoff purchased land northeast of Hillsborough which he built into what is now known as Woodland Hills. Wolkoff named his home "Calabasas". In 1892, William Atherton subdivided some land east of Calabasas and established Atherton Park which still remains one of the largest tracts in Calabasas today. Atherton Park became an enclave for wealthy white women who resided there during World War II when most male residents served in military or government services overseas; this area remains mostly white today with few exceptions. During that time period many small businesses sprang up around Atherton Park such as hardware store bakeries,delivery service companies, bookstores and garage sales stores along with several schools including Pasadena High School (nowwestern high school), La Jolla Country Club (later Claremont Colleges) and Angelica Girls' Academy (). Many people who lived here during that time also went on to found important institutions like Occidental College (), USC () and UCLA (). In 1951 much of this area became incorporated into the City of Los Angeles when then Mayor Vincent Tobin approved Measure M which designated all future annexation within Los Angeles County by cities with a population over 10,000 residents as part of an effort to increase density withinLACity(). In 1967 portions Of Woodland Hills annexed into Culver City while other areas like North Hollywood annexed later that year making Calabasa one city once again (). In recent years portions Of Culver City have been annexed back into Calabasa while other parts have remained unincorporated . Today both cities share a border running down First Street between them through Westchester Village northwest to Boyle Heights southeast towards Carson Valley
