Calabasas is a community located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The area now known as Calabasas was first inhabited by the Mono people, who built their villages on top of hills near present-day Interstate 5 and State Route 99. The area was later settled by Spanish settlers, who named it Rancho Cucamonga after two ranchos they owned in nearby Ontario County. In 1848, during the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna made an attack against General Winfield Scott at Monterey and drove the retreating Mexican troops from California. As part of this campaign, Santa Anna founded La Paz Barracks here in 1848. By 1862, most of what is now Calabasas had been developed as a mining town with various stores and homes belonging to local miners and their families. After several years of growth and development, however, gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill led to a rush for land around Calabasas that led to heavy deforestation leading to increased flooding which destroyed many homes and businesses throughout the 1860s. With little hope for finding additional gold until much later in his career (1885), Jedediah Smith began prospecting along U.S.-Rancho Cucamonga Road in 1863 looking for new sources of water power for his smelter at Sacramento City while still living in Topeka, Kansas Territory. He found small amounts of gold but no ore worth processing; he abandoned his claims there in 1865 when he discovered more important mineral prospects on behalf of American Gold Fields Ltd., another company operating out of Stockton then eastside Los Angeles County). The Calabasas area was first inhabited by the native Tongva people. The first European to visit the area was Fernando de Noronha, a Portuguese explorer in 1542. In 1847, Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto discovered and named the area Presidio de la Bahía de Los Angeles after his victory over the Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek. The Presidio was abandoned in 1848 when it became part of Mexico. The California Gold Rush began in 1849 and quickly attracted many people to the area, including some who built towns such as Glendora and Lancaster. After gold was found in nearby San Bernardino County, California, many more people came to Calabasas to explore and prospect for mineral rights. In 1860, the eastern edge of what is now Calabasas City Limits was established when sections of Rancho San Jacinto were annexed into the city limits of Glendora. In 1892, following annexation of portions of Bakersfield and Lancaster Counties into Glendale County, Calabasas became an official county seat. On July 14th 1912, voters passed a resolution calling for a courthouse in Calabasa which would be dedicated on December 6th 1912. construction began on the current courthouse on land that had been donated by Mrs John Pritzker (later Mayor) in 1916-17; it replaced an earlier structure which had been destroyed during World War I bombing raids by Japan. The new courthouse remains one of downtown Glendale's most popular attractions today due to its historical significance as well as its architecture and condition which has been preserved since it opened as part ofglendalehistoryandculture center complex in 1978
