The history of Calabasas begins with the arrival of Spanish settlers in 1769. The area that is now Calabasas was part of Rancho San Antonio, which was granted to Francisco Vásquez de Coronado by King Carlos III of Spain. The Presidio Real de California was founded in 1821 by Governor Manuel Micheltorena, and land grants were made to individuals and families who claimed title to the land. In 1846, Mexico won their war against United States forces and acquired California as a result. The Mexican-American War began in April 1848 and ended on October 19th, 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On January 6th, 1850, the US Congress passed a bill known as the Compromise of 1850 which ceded parts of California east of the missions to Mexico for $1 million. This event marked the end of Anglo-Saxon control over much of California. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Calabasas became part of Los Angeles County when it was split off from Pasadena County. On July 29th, 1920, Southern Californian voters approved Proposition 13 which repealed all state taxes on property south of Interstate 5 (the so-called “ Bonus Tax”). This measure helped make Calabasas one of the wealthiest communities in southern California. Calabasas has seen its share of growth throughout its history - both due to its location within easy reachof major metropolitan areas and also because it has been an important agricultural center for many years. Calabasas, California is a city in Ventura County, California. It is located on the Santa Paula Peninsula and has a population of over 162,000 as of the 2010 census. The city's name comes from the Spanish word for "calabash" (a type of fruit). Calabasas was founded by European Americans in 1879 as an agricultural community on Rancho Santa Margarita. The area now known as Calabasas was first inhabited by Miwok Indians and then by Chumash Native Americans. In 1879, General James W. Riley formed the nucleus of what would become Los Angeles County with land that he had purchase from the Chumash people at Mission San Buenaventura. The town site was chosen because it offered abundant water resources and good grazing lands for cattle and horses. The original settlers were mostly European-American farmers who arrived in wagon trains through Southern California during the early days of ranching. Many of these pioneers were attracted to this new country because they saw it as a place where they could make their fortune farming cotton and other crops while also enjoying good hunting and fishing opportunities. By 1870, there were about 20 buildings in Calabasas; only five remained after World War II when the towns growth accelerated due to its proximity to Hollywood and other major metropolitan areas across Southern California. Calabasas was founded in 1853 by Joshua H. Calhoun and his brother, David C. Calhoun. The first post office was established at Calabasas on December 14, 1853. In 1870, the town had a population of eighty-six people. The first school was built in 1874 and the first Methodist church in 1865. In 1916, the town had a population of three hundred fifty-five people and it became an incorporated city in 1932. The City Council voted to change its name to "Calabasas" on October 1, 1933.
