Calabasas is a city located in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 739 at the 2010 census. Calabasas is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It has a temperate climate and covers an area of 24 square miles (61 km2). The first Europeans to visit what is now Calabasas were Spanish missionaries in 1769, who named it San Marcos because they thought it might be a small island. A later mission, San Gabriel Mission, was established on land that today makes up most of northwestCalabasas. The town started as a tiny hamlet called Rancho Santa Margarita and grew rapidly when gold was discovered in 1859 near present-day Fillmore and Empire Streets. Gold Prospectors from around the world came todig for gold in California during the 1860s; many settled in Rancho Santa Margarita, where prospectors built wooden shacks called adobe huts for their work. By 1870, about 150 people were living there, including 30 Anglo men working on horseback keeping lookout for strikes while their families ate locusts and other food items from nearby forests and grapevines. Some Englishmen also worked odd jobs or mined lead at Mission Trails Mines until 1875 when American rule ended with Mexican independence through Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. From then on, Californians referred to all Mexicans as "chinos" (Chinese), even though they were not actually Chinese unless they went by that name socially - many did not learn English well enough to identify themselves as such after arriving hereabouts In 1881, some local capitalists organized three townships – Imperial Valley West; Imperial Valley East; and southern Kern County – out of parts of Rancho Santa Margarita which had been divided among various investors involved in mining operations statewide at that time. The new townships became known as "californiales". In 1901–02 two more townships – eastern Orange County (now Riverside) and western Kern County (now Hanford) – became part of the city limits along with much additional rural acreage eastward into CALIFORNIA VALLEY communities like Ontario Hills & Saugus

In 1931, when Hollywood was founded, Calabassa became one of its early film towns. The industry brought many people to Calabasa who would continue to live there until the late 1970s when it was revealed that local groundwater was being mined for oil and gas. As a result of this development, many businesses closed down and the population began to decline. However, since 1999, growth has resumed with new businesses opening up in downtown Calabasa as well as new housing developments nearby.
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish explorers in the 16th century and Jesuit missionaries in the 18th century. The area was part of Mexico until1848, when it became an independent republic under Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The United States acquired California from Mexico in 1848, and renamed it after General Stephen Kearny as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1855, the region was hit by a severe drought that caused widespread food prices to rise. In response, Californians adopted a series of radical measures including growsouring ( planting crops indoors instead of outdoors), water usage deregulation, and land-use changes such as irrigation systems and monoculture farming. This led to increased economic development, population growth, environmental degradation, and social unrest statewide. In 1912–13rought by labor strikes and political protests against government policies legalizing unions and other new rights for women, Governor George Clements signed into law one of the most sweeping social reforms in American history: Education Code No. 6362 which granted school districts wide latitude to set up their own academic programs without state interference or financial assistance. This led to increased enrollment at public schools throughout Southern California; however there remained significant student poverty and lack of access for low-income students . This situation changed dramatically during World War II when demand for wartime production goods soared; consequentlyeducational opportunities improved greatly for all groups within society – regardless of race or class .
