Calabasas, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded on April 14, 1887 by Americans George and Lucile Calabrese as a small community of about 20 people on the east side of Pasadena. The population was estimated to be over 100,000 at its peak in the 1920s. Today, Calabasas is a bedroom community for Los Angeles and has a population of about 60,000 people. The town's namesake comes from two brothers who settled there in 1887: George Calabrese (1847-1927) from Italy and his brother-in-law Charles Wirtz (1850-1925). They named their little town after the beautiful hills near where they lived in Pasadena. In 1907, when they merged with nearby Agoura Hills to form an enlarged city of Pasadena, the name was changed to Calabasas because that's what everyone called it back then. Calabasas experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location at Hollywood Boulevard and University Avenue as well as its proximity to munitions plants and military installations across Southern California. The wartime boom led to increased housing development around campus; by 1961, it had reached its present size with over 1 million residents within a radius of 10 miles (16 kilometers). However, postwar prosperity quickly eroded following the oil embargo of 1973 and other economic shocks. By 1980, Calabasas' economy was only marginally better than that of neighboring El Monte; by 2000 it had sunk so low that census figures showed just under 50 percent of residents living below poverty line. In recent years there has been renewed interest in reviving downtown Calabasa - which includes restoration or renovation of several old buildings dating back to early days in the city's history - but progress has been slow due largely to limited financial resources. Despite this lacklustre performance overall though crime rates remain relatively high for an inner city area – particularly given chronic housing shortages – many locals continue to live here despite difficult times
There is a long and complex history of handguns, shotguns, and slings. One of the earliest firearms was the sling, which was used to shoot arrows. Calabasas, California is a small city located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 75,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Calabasas was founded by MexicanAmericans in 1881 as a small town known as Rancho Cucamonga. In 1912, Calabasas became an incorporated city and has since grown to become one of Southern California's most populous cities with over 160,000 residents. The first permanent settler in what would become Calabasas was José Figueroa who came to Rancho Cucamonga from Mexico in 1847 and named the piece of land after his home village of Cadiz, Spain. Figueroa's brother Vicente settled on a portion of Rancho Cucamonga which he divided among their four brothers- Vicente, Pedro, Francisco and Mariano– giving each family title to certain sections or portions thereof. The area now includes parts of both Ventura and Orange Counties as well as several neighborhoods within Downtown LOS ANGELES In 1881, two brothers- Joaquin Miller (1844-1927) and Ruben Carrillo (1846-1926) – purchased some undeveloped land east of Palmdale from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1 per acre ($10 per km²), becoming the first white men to set foot on what would later be called "the Valley". They named their new community after John Sutter's successful expedition that explored present day Sacramento River during the Gold Rush era in 1849: "Caldavis" after Sutter's shipwrecked party that reached Fillmore Bay on July 24th 1850; "Sutterville"after leader John Sutter himself
The first Europeans to visit Calabasas were the Spanish in 1769. The area was part of Rancho Cucamonga, which was sold to Jean-Baptiste de Vallejo in 1823. In 1834, the U.S. government acquired Rancho Cucamonga and added it to the Mexican land grant of Tejon Rancho Gutierrez. In 1848, Santiago Bautista Cabrillo explored and mapked San Pedro Bay on behalf of Mexican President Ignacio Comonfort and Upon his return from sea voyage in January 1784 he named this bay San Pedro because "it had been discovered by him near Pomona." In 1850, Victoriano Huerta purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of land at the mouth of the Cascais River from Juan Bautista Morelos for $5 per acre. This became Huerta Heights afterHuerta built a house on top of a hill there in 1865. John Wesley Powell explored and mapped the route followed by California Railroad Company's main line through this area in 1888 while working as an engineer for Phineas Gage. In 1907, Harry Houdini entertained circusgoers at his own private ranch east of town when he lived there with his family during World War I; later that year he leased it to actor Charlie Chaplin who used it as his headquarters for many years until his death in 1931. In 1940 Calabasas elected its first City Councilmember, Mrs Elizabeth Sprague DeLongi.*
