The Calabasas Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 1892. The club purchased a rifle from the American Arms Company and began to shoot at local ranges. In 1897, the club purchased a pistol from John J. Gorney, who lived in Pasadena. The club continued to shoot at local ranges until 1902 when they changed their range to what is now known as the California Rifle and Pistol Range located off of I-5 in Arcadia.

The first mayor was Lorenzo Pappe. In 1916, the United States acquired California from Mexico in a land swap. As part of the deal, Calabasas became a U.S. territory with a population of just over 5,000 people. In 1929, Governor James Mudd issued an executive order creating the Department of Commerce and Industry within the newly created government of California. This department would become one of the most important in California history because it played a major role in developing Calabasas into one of Southern California's leading communities. The City Council changed their name to CALABASAS CITY COUNCIL on November 3rd 1951 after adopting Resolution No 2267 which read "That whereas we have always enjoyed special distinction as a community situated on both banks of the San Joaquin River;Whereas we appreciate all that has been done for us by our municipal fathers throughout these many years;And Whereas it is our hope that through continued cooperation between ourselves and other interested citizens we may make strides forward towards realization of our common goals."
Calabasas, California was first settled by the Tongva people in the early 1800s. The area was named after a cape on the Simi River. In 1847, Calabasas was founded as a post office by Captain John C. Fremont and his party of travelers. It became an agricultural town in 1881 when railroads were built through the area. The town's economy changed to manufacturing during World War II when military production increased in the region. After the war, Calabasas lost its manufacturing industries but regained some of its former economic status as a bedroom community for Los Angeles County.
