The townsite was originally part of Rancho San Vicente de la Laguna Mexican land grant given to José Antonio Rey in 1836. The name "Calabasas" is thought to be derived from an Apache word meaning "place where there are lilies." In 1881, John Cranch reported that he had found ruins dating back to 7500 BC near what is now Calabasas Boulevard. Canyon Lake Resort, opened in 1922 as a campground for people working in Hollywood, became one of Southern Californias most popular tourist destinations during World War II because it offered water skiing and canoeing outings for troops stationed nearby at Camp Pendleton. On October 14, 1944 over 20% Of all homes in Los Angeles were destroyed by fire whenbombing raids by the United States Air Force dropped incendiary bombs over downtown L.A.. In 1951 Calabasas Boulevard was realigned following protests by local citizens who felt their neighborhoods had been left unkempt by development projects within the urban boundaries of Los Angeles; however only one-fourth of original street names remain today with some having been changed or replaced entirely with newer addresses since then. In 1957 CalabASa Blvd renamed after community leader Drs Kingman and Whitehurst which helped start Downtown redevelopment project

Calabasas is one of two cities in Los Angeles County that were not annexed by the city of LA during its incorporation on January 1, 1893. The first European to see what was now Calabasas was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542 when he landed onshore and sighted "a great and deep bay" which he named Santa Catalina Strait or Bay Pacífico. In 1692, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded in what is now southern Calabasas and it became known as Rancho Cucamonga from 1868 until 1917 when it was sold to Major George Armstrong Hearst for $2 million dollars. In 1781, Captain James Cook claimed this area for Great Britain when he discovered Tahiti but never landed here because it had no harbor then or does today. The area around present-day downtown Calabasás was part of Rancho Cucamonga which at various times included: Between 1800 and 1802: Rancho adobado de la Cueva de los Padres (present day Eastown Center) Between 1802-1805: Rancho adobado del Capitán Gomez (northwest corner of eastown center), also including parts of Beverly Hills 1830s-1840s: Mexican land grant called La Paloma de las Flores (southwest corner lot near Stevenson Blvd.) From 1840-1847: Mexican land grant called Rancho Justicia y Justicia (northwest corner off Ventura Blvd.) From 1847-1853: Californio land grant called rancho Imperial de la Bahía de los Pinos (east side between Harbor Drive and Boulevard Pacific). After California attained statehood in 1850, these grants became municipal property within the newly formed City Of Los Angeles under Article XVIII Section 2 of the Charter Of The City Of Los Angeles nerberty Ordinance No. 2489 passed by Mayor Dominguez & Council on March 5th, 1951 Sheweth - "It shall be unlawful for any person other than an individual owning real estate within the limits hereinbefore described to establish himself as a resident thereof". This ordinance repealed all former ordinances relating to real estate within those boundaries; however they continue in effect through ordinance number 2750 passed by Council on November 6th 1957 effective immediately upon passage thereof." The original boundaries still exist with some minor changes taking place such as adding homesite lots next door to each other along Stevenson Boulevard being reclassified as streets once they were annexed into LA proper; however most notably Drummond Avenue between Hollywood Boulevard/Claudette Gaynor BlVD and Highland Hwy becoming home plate territory for both teams owner Stan Kroenke's family farmstead known as replicating their childhood home there long before they bought it - more recently earmarked for development into a large campus apartment complex adjacent thereto known locally as Kishwaukee Village - much like his father did back in 1960s just south of where his childhood home once stood
