The land for what would become Calabasas was given to the indigenous peoples by the Tongva people after they discovered oil reserves here in 1859. In 1876, when Rancho San Luis Rey de la Frontera was established east of present-day Calabasas, some settlers arrived from Southern California looking for new grazing land. The name "Calabasa" means 'place where water comes out' in both English and Spanish. In 1905, George Washington Kapp created a small citrus orchards near Present-day Calabasa as part of his effort to improve irrigation systems adjacent to his rancho Grande de Cucamonga. A year later, Kapp donated 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land west of present-day Calabasa to build a schoolhouse and other educational facilities for hisación del río Santa Susana y el Río Pico resort area which he had founded east of town in 1901 with money he received from American millionaire Leslie Halsey Gorges. On May 10th 1906 School District No 8 organized as region 8A within Southern California public schools system with boundaries based on Kapp's donation including that portion now lying between FM 522 & SR 167 just south of I-5 through Lululemon Canyon north to SR 299 about midway between I-5 & SR 167 In 1911 an agreement was reached between aerial photographer Edwin Land and real estate developer Harry Fenton whereby Land would develop parcels bounded by Hexted Rd., US 101W RT., Menifee Rd., Yerba Buena Ave., Chino Rd., Orange Ct./Orinda Ave., Clarendon Dr./SR 6RT./Pinecrest Dr./Newhall St.(Old Part), Chino Manor(Lacking Manor), Garden Villa( conceptionally laid out Villages NorthWest Of #11 Residence Road.), Villa Del Carmen SouthEast Of Old Part.) finally incorporating parts Lots 3 thru 11 From 4th Ward Business DistrictsNorthwest Of Pasadena Blvd.) lot 12 did not enter into this Agreement but became parcel 2Exterior Work began On This Lot Before Agreement Was Reached - January 1912 The first fruits were grown on lot 36 which still stands today across from Loretto Elementary School off CR 234SW from I-5 SOUTH OF CALABASAS HIGHWAY 9) In 1912 names changed from Los Angeles oranges to Citrus fruit because it became apparent that orange crops could not provide enough income self sufficing only dur ing winter months when no sun could be seen anywhere near these fields so we called them Citrus fruit all those years until recently sometime someone suggested changing it back again….I think we should change it back too
