The first buildings were built on what is now State Route 173. In 1865 a group of Italian Americans organized into a company to build the first railroad in Ventura County and renamed their town "Cali" after Rome. When that line became bankrupt, they sold all their interest to build another railroad which called their town "Calabasas". The name stuck and today Calabasas is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ventura County because of its beautiful scenic country roadsides and cultural attractions such as art galleries, theaters, symphony orchestras and restaurants with Italian flare. By 1870, Calabasas had become one of Southern California's leading commercial centers due to its location at the junction of two important trade routes: The Santa Fe Railroad led to Los Angeles and then down the Central Valley to Sacramento; while the Pacific Railway brought goods upriver to San Francisco Bay. The city's population reached over 100,000 by 1910 but peaked at over 200,000 during World War I when it became one of America's largest war production areas. Afterward, however, housing prices fell rapidly and Calabasas' population cratered until it reached its current low levels in 2000. Today, much of what once characterized Calabassan society has been replaced by modern day amenities such as universities and shopping malls – both within walking distance of each other – making it difficult for outsiders to understand how this once vibrant community functioned historically or even still exists today.

In 1928,Caltech moved from its original location on North Campus into new buildings on South Campus (now part of UCLA). In 1941, during World War II, Naval Air Station Catalina operated out of Calabasas for arming and refueling Japanese bombers flying over Southern California during the war. During 1945-1946, local civilians aided by soldiers from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton helped clear away minesfield around Okinawa which had caused extensive damage to agriculture there; this event is sometimes referred to as "Operation Neptune". In 1957-1958,Caltech physicists worked on Project RAND (Research Advisory Committee on Nuclear Energy), which developed nuclear weapons research plans for US military advisors working with NATO nations during Operation Jupiter's Fury. After Project RAND ended in 1958 they moved back onto North Campus where they continued their work until 1991 when they relocated again (to Oak Ridge National Laboratory) due to fears that nuclear testing might occur within range of their campus should Los Alamos be closed down permanently.]
