By 1888, over 50 homes had been built in what is now downtown Calabasa thanks to contributions from local citizens such as Jens Jensen (founder of Jens Jensen Brewing Company), Simeon Bancroft (founder of Occidental Gas Light & Coke Company), and Edward Fenton (founder of Fruitlands Nursery). Downtowns As We Know It began to grow rapidly during World War II when many locals enlisted in the military or volunteered their time and skills for defense projects around Southern California. In 1945, when Downtowns opened its doors for business after years of planning by Mayor Harry Pritchard, it had grown to include more than 100 businesses employing over 1,000 people - making it one of America's largest commercial districts at that time! After years of growth and development throughout the postwar decades – due largely to successive mayors presiding over an active downtown – Downtowns experienced another surge beginning in 2000 when Mayor Pat Garofalo dedicated $5 million towards creating a new plaza along Santa Monica Boulevard between First Street/Metro Rail Station and 4th Street/Shopping Center Parkway which would host numerous restaurants including Starbucks Coffee Works then called Giannini’s Pizza Place; renovated old courthouses like San Gabriel Courthouse & Jail;added several high-end shops including Sephora;andLinda’s Liquor Store moved into its current location adjacent to Staples Center! In recent years downtown redevelopment has slowed down as residents have turned their attention towards suburban communities east of I-405 within walking distance such as North Hollywood (Los Angeles) or Van Nuys (Van Nuys Hills). However pockets still remain throughout Downtown where smaller businesses continue to thrive even as larger chains leave – witness Macy’s Rack ‘n’ Roll occupying what was once Sears Tower before being replaced by Lululemon Athletica last year! In March 2018 it was reported that American Apparel will close its store inside Macy’s next door later this year after struggling unsuccessfully against competition from Nordstrom Rack which plans - without any warning - also to close its website next month citing online competition from Amazon Warehouse Sale . This follows same pattern seen across other historical retailer closures throughout Downtown Los Angeles starting with Sears shuttering all but four floors back in 1984 followed by Kmart pulled out altogether less than two miles away just before Christmas becoming CenturyLink Field leaving only anchor tenants like Safeway Supermarket remaining until recently
