In 1894, George Washington Dickson patented a new airgun that he called the "Dickson Rifle." This rifle was designed to be fired by means of a rubber band or other similar device connected to the barrel. This allowed shooters to aim at targets long distances with great accuracy. In 1898, Dickson's company was acquired by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, and the rifle continued to be manufactured under their name. In 1903, Winchester introduced an improved version of the Dickson Rifle that became known as the Model 1886. The Model 1886 featured a gas-operated action that permitted shooters to fire either rounds from single or double triggers. It also had a metal stock and forends made of hardwood for better grip. During World War I, many American soldiers used airguns as part of their artillery arsenal.
