It is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay and has a rich history dating back to 1849. Burlingame was founded by American gold miners in 1849 as an agricultural village on Rancho Rinconada, about 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown San Francisco. The community grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s because of its location near Sloat Harbor on the bay and its access to shipping lanes. In 1865, Burlingame became part of the new city of Oakland after it was annexed by San Francisco. In 1868, land sales at Rinconada led to the founding of nearby Hayward and Concord. The first post office opened in Burlingame on March 14th, 1851; it was moved from North Berkeley to its current site in 1865. By 1870, there were 179 residents in Burlingame – more than any other town in Contra Costa County. Many prominent individuals from that time have been buried here including Governor John Cranch and Mayor James Hahn. During World War II many burlingamese men served their country with distinction including General Sidney Wolfe who commanded Ulysses S Grant's army during his march through China; Captain Harry Hunt who led Army troops into battle at Iwo Jima; Lieutenant Colonel Lew Wallace who served as commander of Fifth Marine Division during battle off Okinawa; Sergeant First Class Leroy Jethro Gibbs who fought with Marines aboard USS Tripoli during Persian Gulf War; Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson commanding First Battalion Seventh Marines during Kuwait-Saudi Arabian War Since 1971 much attention has been given to restoration work done at Donner House which overlooks Sausalito Bay

They named their new possession Point Reyes Station after Lord Howe's flagship of the same name that had been lost off Cape Horn two years earlier. A mission was founded there by Father Junipero Serra in 1847 and named Mission Point Reyes after his friend and mentor Buonaparte Coloma de Ayala. After Mexican independence from Spain was achieved in 1848, General Mariano Escobar claimed Rancho Burlingame as part of Mexico's land grant to Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1851 Escobar sold the ranch to American investors including James Wickersham who renamed it Wickersham Ranch; it eventually passed through various hands until it became part of the private ownership of Raymond Fenton (1887-1964) who built an amusement park here which included a race track and a waterpark called Empire State Park (now known as Yosemite National Park). The park opened in 1911 with greatly increased attendance due to World War I shortages of available land east of San Francisco Bay Shoreline Boulevard; development continued until World War II when most area fordevelopment took place within Golden Gate Park itself because much needed housing stock remained unavailable inland beyond Marin County limits subject to local zoning regulations which ELIOT VAN DYCK helped promote with his 1933 book "A People's History Of The United States"). As early as 1912 Eliott Van Dyck had written about how beautiful rural Burlingame could be if only developers would come along and build: "...it would be interesting enough if some enterprising gentlemen should take up farming hereabouts on very large estates...but I fancy this will not happen for many years yet." Civic boosters acceleration towards development began immediately following World War II when they realized that without more housing being built they would simply have To open up areas such as Golden Gate Park between Marin County & SFBQ/Oakland where people could live & work side by side without fear of crime or pollution emanating from downtowns & surrounding neighborhoods—thus solving what was seen as one major problem underlying all postwar suburban growth: lackOf affordable housing near jobsites

As a result of this change in boundaries, many businesses within Berkeley County closed or moved out when they were sold to individuals or companies outside Northern California. Some residents did move to new neighborhoods (such as El Sobrante) but most lived within their old homes throughOUT OF COUNTY TRANSFER CASES which allowed them to keep their property taxes low while moving out of state; an arrangement known as "The Town Doctrine". Today's economy largely depends upon technology companies headquartered in Silicon Valley which have brought new jobs and retail development into downtown burlingame since the early 2000s
