Burlingame is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, located about 20 miles northwest of Sacramento. The population was 7,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Sacramento Area. The name of the town was derived from an English name meaning "Beautiful View." The first post office opened in 1878, and the first store was established in 1881. The present Burlingame Plaza Shopping Center opened in 1989. Burlingame's history goes back to 1861 when residents of nearby Alpinequa petitioned for a post office to be established there because they could not find one within their community. On November 3, 1861, Postmaster General James K. Polk issued Act No. 2 which appointed George A. Smith as agent with power to receive applications for post offices from anywhere within the United States or any foreign country and to make nomination letters on file for selection by President Abraham Lincoln as deputy commissioner for mail services under his direction (the first such appointment). A second application for a post office was filed on December 12, 1861 by John Hennessey who named his property "Burlingame" after his home place near Canterbury-on-Tees in England where he had been born in 1784 (now part of Middlesbrough, England). On February 10, 1862 Pacific Mail Steamship Company registered its voyage SS Pescadero from Oakland under Captain Wm Fenton with destination San Francisco Bay Area and reported that they had reached "a very beautiful bay with considerable hills on each side". In 1865 another application arrived from Samuel Emery who offered land situated east of present day Burlingame along Spring Creek (near Redding) if it could be authenticated that this land had ever been inhabited by Native Americans before white settlers came through during the 1850s; it was not until 1870 that documented evidence confirmed this claim and an appropriation by Lieutenant Colonel David Sibley became effective naming eight claims around Spring Creek area including Burlingame creek bed as Rancho Bernardo de las Vegas y Monterey County Mexican Land Claim #1 (later known as Rancho Santa Fe del Norte). In 1875 Chico Mining District miners led by Don Pedro Carrillo began working at Anacapa gold mine onshore and soon discovered new silver veins below sea level producing what is now known as Carrillo Silver Mine (named after him). This discovery set off a mining rush which caused extensive flooding throughout much of Northern California due to over-abundance of water resulting from melting snowpack brought down during winter months – one cause being large volume shipments accompanying everyday summer rains found stored underground since ancient times when Mono Lake filled up slowly due to periodic monsoons enabling minimal erosion over time; also contributing were factors such as strategic location overlooking major trade routes subject only indirectly to annual flooding affecting agricultural areas inland while offshore salt marshes sustained marine life unchanged year round resulted finally culminating with fullfillment following persistent bear sightings between 1900–1920 leading some local farmers into joining forces with Stanford University geologist Jorgensen Miller attempting explore those deposits ). After years vain efforts various groups united–California Gold Rush Association formed January 25th 1887 uniting officials, entrepreneurs & miners interested in exploring resources & developing new technologies associated w/gold rush era production difficulties—in effort becoming self sufficient (& organized), winning passage w/ congressional act creating public domain alluvial goldfields around world . After several more unsuccessful attempts starting circa 1912 most operations ceased abruptly due mainly to droughts McClintock Strike & other social unrest .) With no federal financial assistance available many pioneer families turnedto personal investment thru syndicate formation––an event chronicled best by author Edward Abbey who lost entire family business share mcClintock Syndicate .) Many Burlingames continue today participating actively w/local government via City Hall employees conduct public meetings downtown during regular business hours.) Today’s businesses include: 1) Apple Inc., 2) Safeway Inc., 3) Wells Fargo Bank Corporation, 4) Starbucks Coffee Company

It is the second most populous city in Contra Costa County after Richmond. The name of the town comes from an English word meaning "bridge over" or "passage through." The first post office opened in 1879. The history of Burlingame dates back to 1839 when Joaquin Miller founded the village of San Ramon on Rancho Rinconada near present-day Burlingame Creek. In 1849, John Sutter discovered gold along what became known as Sutter's Mill Road and began developing the area into a settlement named for him, Sutter's Fort. In 1860, Jedediah Smith and his party discovered and mapped the San Francisco Bay Valley and soon established towns at Alameda (1861), Newark (1862), and Sacramento (1866). With only two exceptions—San Leandro (1867) and Hayward (1868)—these towns grew rapidly due to waves of new arrivals who found work in agriculture or mining. By 1870, there were 20 settlements in Contra Costa County with a population of 250 people. In 1876, Buena Vista was founded by six American miners as a stop on their way to prospect for gold in Northern Mexico; it had no commercial significance until 1886 when it became headquarters for several thousand soldiers occupying Santa Clara County during the Mexican Revolution. A year later it merged with other nearby villages forming what is now called Borough of San Lorenzo de los Baños which included all of present-day Contra Costa County except Dogpatch where Coyote Hills still stands today as an agricultural community with some residential development outside its boundaries
