In 1876, The Burlingame Examiner reported on a new telescope being developed in the town of Burlingame. It was also the first large aperture telescope in operation. The observatory operated until 1907 when it was destroyed by fire. The design was based on an earlier instrument, the periscope, which used a focuser and eyepiece to view targets located above the user's head. The first modern Spotting Scope was created by Capt. George Airy in 1802. A float device was attached to a mount such that it could be placed on any surface, allowing users to place their eye directly upon the target while viewing through a mirror or lens at an angle other than vertical (i.e., horizontial). One example is how American gold miners brought their way of life and ways of working with tools they had never seen before to this small corner of California during the 1800s. They carved out a place for themselves among all those who came after them through hard work and determination; burlingames were known for their sturdy homespun fabrics that still survive today! Over time they also opened up new businesses such as post office buildings (1899), restaurants (1910-1968), banks (1912-1977), medical practices (1913-2006) and more! Despite these setbacks some other changes did occur too: certain neighborhoods slowly gentrified while others remained relatively rural until the early 21st century when high technology began moving into downtown areas like Burlingame Boulevard where many businesses now continue to thrive such as Google Fiber headquarters! Lastly there are many examples throughout our history where different groups came together to help one another succeed including: women's suffrage movement leader Dolores Huerta coming here from Mexico City after she won her seat on local government officials there; African Americans working together at various factories during WWII to help feed soldiers on leave; Latinos coming here during the late 1960s looking for affordable housing options amidst changing demographics; LGBTQ+ refugees fleeing violence in Central America arriving here through processing centers like Ellis Island before being processed into U.S.-based families!]
Burlingame is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Peninsula and is part of the Silicon Valley metropolitan area. The first settler in Burlingame was John Fenton, who arrived in 1848. In 1853, Captain George Simpson built a sawmill on the now site of Brisbane Street and Bancroft Avenue. The town was named for Mr. Burlingame (a British gentleman) who donated land for the mill. By 1862, Burlingame had a store and two churches; it had also extensive agriculture including sheep-raising and growing grapes. At that time there were no schools in Burlingame so children attended local Mission schools while they learned English or other skills needed for workaday life outside their homes. In 1865, Mrs. Cushman started an orphanage which still operates today as Cushman House School District No.. 1 school house & orphanage (now Old High School). That same yearCaptain George Simpson died suddenly leaving his wife Mrs. Simpson with 3 young children to take care of; she operated the mill until her death in 1875 aged just 42 years old! In 1876 Captain George's widow Mrs Simpson married James Waddingham who ran a cabbage warehouse on Market Street from about 1870 until his death in 1906 when it moved to larger quarters at 6th and Harrison Streets near City Hall!Mrs Simpson's husband James Waddingham left behind many descendants who continue to operate the business up to this day! In 1901 burlingame got its own post office which opened under siege by fires set by anarchists protesting against US wars abroad! After being saved by firefighters from burning down completely three weeks later, Burlingames' post office reopened on May 15th 1901 under new management led by Captains Floyd McKay (& wife) & Hedy Lamarr with mail service continuing uninterrupted until 1975 when it closed due to budget cuts!
