Burlingame is a small town in San Mateo County, California. It is located on the shore of Pacific Ocean and is at an elevation of 23 feet (7 m). The population was 5,827 as of 2010. The name "Burlingame" comes from the Malay word bumi meaning "land". The first European to visit Burlingame was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 25, 1542. He named it Isla de los Pescadores because he thought there were fish living there. In 1846, United States Commodore James K. Polk visited and named it for General José Báez Carrillo, the Mexican general who had helped to drive Mexico out of California. In 1876, American explorer Jedediah Smith discovered gold in what is now eastern San Francisco Bay when his party traveled east along the coast from Stockton across Gilroy Strait to Sausalito before returning home through the Golden Gate Bridge and into Marin County. This led to a gold rush which started in 1877 and continued until 1888 when all but 2 percent of the total found was recovered in just over two months at Sutter's Mill near today's Milpitas. The townships that make up Burlingame are part of Rancho Santa Fe Nuevo which formed parts of Rancho San Rafael Acapulco y Misamis Oriental on Rancho Santa Fe de Atascosa after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. The grantees included Captain John Copley who opened an agricultural colony there with help from missions such as Mission Dolores (founded 1769), Mission San Fancisco (1798), Mission Concepcion (1801) andMission San Lorenzo Neri (1824). Most of these early settlers died during Spanish-American War era fighting or fleeing wars with Californios such as Alvarado's Battalion composed mostly of Mexican Americans who fought for United States against their colonial government during this time period including General Antonio López de Santa Anna who ordered Major Francisco Urquiza to massacre about 190 unarmed civilians near Yerba Buena Island - one thousand people lost their lives during this conflict known as Los Pinos Expedition - making him infamous (). As a result many land grants were given out throughout California following war fever resulting mainly from rich silver deposits being discovered along both coasts making it much more desirable for settlers seeking access to these resources than traditional agriculture/ ranching methods where soil degradation often resulted leading to loss or abandonment due to environmental problems caused by overuse including flooding although some eventually developed successful commercial enterprises.) On November 16, 1859 Samuel Morse contracted malaria while exploring north central California; he succumb two weeks later at age 36 becoming the first person ever diagnosed with malaria west of the Mississippi River. However despite this setback Morse quickly became interested in technology & moved back east where he met Alfred Vail & founded Vail Earthworks which built most major Ulysses S Grant traverse connecting Emporia Junction KY (& Sacramento) via Salt Lake City UT (& Ogden UT)) thus opening up western Utahrapture area for settlement by white men route finding thru snowmobiling
