In 1853, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort here after finding gold near modern day Redwood City. Settlers built homes around Sutter's Fort, with many still extant today including Mission House and Old Town Hall (now The Old Post Office Museum). In 1865, General George Custer led his Seventh Cavalry into what is now central San Mateo County during his Last Stand at Palo Alto Ridge; his troopers lost many men hereincluding Custer himself who was captured by Indians later that year at Golden Gate Bridge south of San Francisco

It began as a small farming community on the edge of San Francisco Bay in 1867 and grew rapidly with the development of the nearby Burlingame Naval Reserve Station (now part of Alameda County) and other naval installations. The city officially incorporated on January 1, 1906. The history of Burlingame can be traced back to 1867 when it was established as a small farming community on the edge of San Francisco Bay by John Witherspoon and his family. Witherspoon's son-in-law, Francis Parker Polk, purchased the land which would later become Burlingame Naval Reserve Station. In 1901, Captain James Halsey founded Project Neptune which aimed to build an experimental submarine base at Point Conception in order to provide defense against Japan during World War I. After this base was completed in 1915,Burlingame became known as one of America's leading submarines communities. In 1907, Mayor George Mueller proposed that Burlingame become a city; however no action was taken until 1912 when Proposition A was passed by voters to create an urban area within San Mateo County without voter approval and without any corresponding change to municipal boundaries or voting procedures. On January 1st 1906 Burlingame became an official City with Mayor Julius Sanger serving as its first mayor On July 20th 1940 Japanese bombers attacked Pearl Harbor; damage done included loss of over 2200 lives including most striking were 524 American sailors who died when USS PEARL HARBOR (CVE-5) exploded during attack causing her entire court building and much adjoining waterfront to collapse resulting in what remains one of California's worst maritime disasters ever with almost $100 million in damage done
