Burlingame is a small town in Northern Marin County, California. It was founded by the Mission Dolores Californian community in 1836 as part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first post office opened in 1853. Burlingame became an incorporated town on December 15, 1916. The population was 27 at the 2010 census. The history of Burlingame begins with the establishment of Mission Dolores by Spanish missionaries in 1836. They named their settlement after the rolling hills near Bakersfield, California where they were stationed. For many years Burlingame lay outside of San Francisco's city limits, and its residents had to travel to work within walking distance of City Hall or take buses to reach their homes. After Mexican independence from Spain in1848, Mexico began receiving large shipments of goods through Sonoma County and Southern Marin County for shipment back home across the Bay Bridge into San Francisco; this drove up prices for goods within San Francisco's city limits and caused merchants there to start importing more materials from other parts of California than from Solano County (the original land grant given to Alta California). This situation led to an increase in demand for goods that could not be produced locally and resulted in development around Bakersfield Boulevard between downtown Burlingame and Stanford University which grew rapidly due to increased traffic along I-5 southbound from Interstate 880 eastward into Silicon Valley during the late 20th century while also providing access to local farmers markets
Burlingame was founded in 1881 byJames Irvine and his wife, Eliza. The town was named after the burlingame grape, which is a type of wine. In 1905, the Santa Cruz Railroad came to Burlingame and started freight service. The railroad allowed for more people to move into the town and it became a popular place for people to live. The town had a post office from 1907 until 1955. Burlingame also had its own school from 1907 until 1954.
