Burlingame, California is a small town in San Mateo County, California. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula. The name of the town was given to it by General John C. Burlingame who served as Commandant of cavalry during the Mexican–American War and was also named for Viscount Corbet, an Englishman who fought in that war. The first Europeans to see what is now Burlingame were Spanish colonists in 1769 when they passed through the area on their way from Mission Bay to Santa Cruz County. In 1821, Captain George Wills discovered oil and gas reserves near present-day Burlingame and decided to place a mill thereon in order to exploit these resources. In 1875, after years of development work led by Edwin Sanger and others, Burlingame became a city with its own water supply and electric lighting. The city's growth continued until World War II when it lost much of its agricultural land due to military bombing raids which destroyed many homes and farms throughout Northern California.
