Burlingame, California is a city located in Northern San Francisco County, California. The population of Burlingame was 64,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Burlingame began as an agricultural community in 1868 when three brothers, John and George Sutcliffe, bought land from the Native American Missionaries who had been living there for more than twenty years. They named their new community after the ancient manor house called "Bellemere" in Hampshire, England which they had seen while on a trip to Europe. In 1876 they built a post office and store on Adobe Road which became known as "The Burlingame Post Office." The first placer gold mine was opened in 1879 by James Waddell and is still mined today but it no longer produces any valuable ore. In 1886 Pacific Gas & Electric Company completed its line from San Francisco to Alameda and opened a station at Bellemere which served as the town's first commercial center. This new development caused much traffic congestion on Adobe Road so Captain Edward Everett Moulton developed a system of pneumatic tubes that carried water (and later gas) supplies from nearby reservoirs to the town center without having to drive or paddle his boat across difficult waters. He also built a number of large homes including what is now known as Moulton House No. 1 which he used as his home until 1912 when he moved into Fort Mason Center where he died in 1970 aged 94 years old In 1870 Burlingame also acquired two acres (0.8 km2) of land north of Bellemere for $1 per acre ($36 per hectare). A school was founded there in 1872 by Mrs. Higginson with thirty-six students under her instruction until it closed in 1908 due to lack of finances or space; however, one building still stands today: Beale School (now part of Diablo Valley College). In 1870, an American gold rush began and soon many people were coming to Burlingame from all over California looking for strikes; some found success while others lost everything they had invested including their homes and businesses. By 1872 only a few hundred people remained in town although mining continued until 1896 when production stopped because of low gold prices caused by worldwide recession following World War I. The post-World War II boom years brought new growth to Burlingame with high-rise housing developments being built beginning in the early 1960s on land that had been leased from local farmers for growing corn and other crops; these developments continue up through present day (the last major development being Parkview Village).
