In 1902–03, two years after statehood gave Californians voting rights, Burlingame became an agricultural center with a market for fruits and vegetables; this led to its nickname "Fruitvale". Manufacturing followed during World War II when local firms produced munitions and aircraft parts; but today most Burlingame businesses are small family farms or retailers. The area's ecology has drawn attention since 1976 when it was designated a National Monument: Incorporating rolling hills punctuated by mountain ranges that run from north-central San Joaquin County all the way down into southern Kern County; these hills provide ample rainfed farmland for hogs and other livestock while also shielding them fromendale desertification caused by climate change.
