Burlingame, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 86,547 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and is included in the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Burlingame was made on December 14th, 1846 by nine men from Rancho El Camino Real who were looking for land to purchase from Mexican landowners. They named their new town "Burbank" after their home town of Brampton, Ontario. The original townsite was east of where San Pablo Bay currently stands and included part of today's Hayward neighborhood as well as what are now parts of Hercules and Tracy neighbourhoods. In 1853, John Sutter established the Sutter Mill Company on ranches near present-day Pleasanton and began to produce flour which he sold to merchants throughout Northern California. This early flour milling operation helped support Burlingame's growth as a commercial center during the late 19th century. In 1898,Burlingame became one of four cities (the others being Oakland, Daly City and San Francisco) that merged to form San Francisco with its own charter government which lasted until 1906 when it was replaced by an appointed Board of Supervisors system under Governor Hiram Johnson. During World War II there was heavy bombing activity over Burlingame – particularly around Mission Bay – causing extensive damage including loss of life and destruction of property both within the city limits and beyond them into rural areas adjacent to the city limits. burlingame post office opened on November 15th 1942 with 10 employees serving 40 days per month; it closed on January 15th 1945 due to lack of mail volume following World War II . Burlingame is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 29,611 at the 2010 census. It is located east of downtown San Francisco and west of Hercules. The name comes from the Italian word "burlare" meaning to break or split. The first people to live in Burlingame were Native Americans who came from northern California overland during the 1849 Gold Rush. They built their initial village on the banks of the American River about two miles east of what is now downtown Burlingame. In 1852, Captain John Brougham and his party discovered oil shale near present-day Mount Shasta and named it after Lord Byron's home country, England. When production ceased in 1904 due to low prices, some residents chose to move away from oil production and nickname their community "Bolingame". However, many others decided to stay because they enjoyed its climate and scenery. In 1911, Burlingame became part of San Francisco when it was annexed by the City of San Francisco as part of its annexation process following a vote by city voters which included an option for annexation into San Francisco if Burlingame voted “yes” on a question asking whether streets should be named for public officials or citizens who had helped make San Francisco a great city. At that time there were only 7 small towns within Contra Costa County with populations under 10,000 including Orinda and Concordia (now Pleasanton). The post office at 125th Street opened in 1913; this address has been occupied since then by various businesses including Burger King Sr., Home Depot Inc., Costco Wholesale Co., Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., Applebee's Restaurant Group LLC and KFC International Inc.. The Commercial Club Building at 625 Sutter St reopened as an Applebee's restaurant in 1984 after being closed for several years due to arson; prior to 1984 it served as an independent movie theater called Regal Cinema II which shuttered in 1988 following gentrification efforts by then- mayor Willie Brown . The current baseball parkcapacity is 41,500 making it one of just six MLB stadiums with more than 40,000 seats overall (the others are Fenway Park/Walking Stone Park (75K), Yankee Stadium/Mound House (100K), Wrigley Field/CSN Park (160K)), Levi Strauss & Co.'s Old Globe Theater (300K)and Madison Square Garden/ MSG Place (400K)). On November 14th 1997 voters passed Proposition 55 which repealed Prohibition in California effective January 1st 1998; wine consumption increased resulting in increased sales tax revenues for state coffers Priority Projects funded through Measure FF include: Martinez Street Reconstruction Project – $4 million dollars will improve infrastructure along Martinez Street between I street and Oakland Boulevard; funding has already been allocated for this project so work will commence soon sidewalk repairs southbound on Martinez Street between I street and Oak Streets; Work on this project begins soon with Phase 2 scheduled to begin later this year once all necessary permits have been obtained
Burlingame was founded in 1868 by Captain John F. Burlingame and his wife, Mary. The town was named for the rolling hills that surrounded it. The first post office was established in 1870. In 1875, the burlesque theater opened in the town and continues to operate today. In 1916, World War I began and Burlingame became a militarytown. Many of the buildings from earlier days remain standing, such as the old schoolhouse and courthouse. The town also saw heavy fighting during World War II as part of the California Defense Corps. A large airfield was built here during that time and is still used today by aircraft enthusiasts.
