In 1872, when Don Fernando y Costilla sold his interest in Rancho Arroyo SecO to James Parnell Goodyear, Wm Halsey Taft became the new owner of that land including the ranchos adjacent to it – Rinconada, Doña Ana and Santa Clara Counties. In 1878, during the last days of Mexican rule over California (1871-1881), many American settlers arrived in Northern California looking for gold prospecting opportunities; some settling along la Purísima River near Red Bluff while others came downriver at Point Lobos where they founded Wilmington and other towns on Mount Shasta’s shoresline before sailing upslope towards Sacramento City on what is now Highway 99W outside Of town today but then it used as Indian Trail way back then In 1886 James Parnell Goodyear organized a group of Anglo Californians who were seeking title deeds to land east of Trinity Street between Daly Street (partially within present day San Francisco) and Harrison Street (& current day Market Street & Jones Avenue)) called “the Honest Settlers” or just “The Gentry” because most members were wealthy men such as George Hearst who had interests both inside & outside California There are references throughout history that show that there may have been more than 100 individuals associated with this effort although exact numbers are unknown On July 15th 1886 after hearing about an offer made by Parnell Goodyear for tracts situated east of Market Street between Harrison Streets & Daly Streets northward among others including Samuel Morse he accepted A letter from goodyear dated November 3rd 1886 stating: "I regret I am not able to come down sooner" however he did provide $500 for goods transport expenses so goodyear's party could start exploring what would become known as Northern California On December 12th 1886 one year after accepting A letter from goodyear Geo Fenton arrived in town bringing news that several men had been killed near Red Bluff while prospecting for gold but no claims had been made yet another meeting was called on January 21st 1887 at which time it was decided "to give up our search until something better crops out" even though there were significant amounts still being found at various locations including Gold Hill northeast ofpresent day Fremont . It should also be noted here that only about 25 miles total lay within present day Sacramento County boundaries making it very much an scattered exploration operation rather than a concerted effort like later efforts After years of searching little progress was made until US Cavalry troopers led by Captain Frederick Benton finally discovered goldfield at Chindrift near Oroville on January 24th 1850 Thereafter large celebrations took place with local citizens gathered aroundCaptain Banford's horse carriage containing a Significant amount(s)of Gold Bullion
