Burbank, California is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, California. The population was 153,823 at the 2010 census. It is considered a bedroom community for the downtown area of Los Angeles. The name "Burbank" comes from the Indian word Buraq, which means "Great Meadows". The first permanent settler in what is now Burbank was José Nieto on May 20, 1847. He and his family were among the approximately 60 who came overland from Mexico City to claim Rancho Cahuenga in present-day Burbank. In 1849 Juan Rodriguez established another rancho about four miles east of Nieto's on land that he acquired from Antonio López de Santa Anna as part of his war effort against Mexican General Mariano Alvarado. In 1853 William Irvine built a sawmill and gristmill within sight of Nieto's Rancho Cahuenga property, which became Irvine Park after he sold part of it to James Irvine in 1865. In 1876 businessman and political boss John Skelton bought 1/2 Mile northeast of where the current courthouse stands and transported an old adobe structure used by Spanish missions to build his new home at what is now South Circle Avenue and Vine Street; it became Burbank's first courthouse (1876). The town began as a small agricultural settlement near Pico Boulevard with only 10 residents in 1886 when three brothers organized a water transmission system from Buena Park to nearby Northridge through their holdings in Burbank then Pomona Hills. Service started on May 25th with customers coming by horseback or wagon drawn buggies down Arco Road into what is now Pioneer Road just north of Pico Boulevard — this was before automobiles had been developed. By 1911 small businesses had sprung up all around Pico Boulevard with fruiterer Fortunato Luigi open at 9th and Vine Streets while candy store Harry Anderson operated south of University Avenue between First Street and Nevada Avenue (now Olympic Boulevard). By 1923 there were 375 buildings within 2 blocks along Pico Boulevard with 135 stores catering to a business populations totaling 3 million people conducted via postcards or telephone calls each day! On July 15th 1907 burbanks 507 high school students took possession of Eisner High School after 150 years without one! The following year Eisner’s football team defeated Long Beach Polytechnic 28-0 before an overflow crowd (some estimates place the attendance at 100,000) watched on live television broadcast by KFWB-TV
