In 1897, Warner Bros., later called Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), bought part of La Brea for $2 million. MGM's first film studio was built on Vine Street – west of today's courthouse – with stages being erected for films such as "The Birth of a Nation" (1885) and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1934). In 1907, Southern Pacific Railway constructed a line from downtown Los Angeles to Culver City over what is now Topanga Canyon Boulevard; Burbank was then served by Southern Pacific Railroad trains only from downtown Los Angeles through Culver City station. The railroad abandoned its line south of Mulholland Drive in 1971 when it merged into Amtrak; however, Amtrak retains trackage rights through Burbank north to CulverCity Station today.. Burbank, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded on October 4, 1916 by the merger of two small villages: Sylmar and Baldwin Hills. The town originally consisted of just twenty-one homes and was named after Oskaloosa Lake in central Iowa. The community's first postmaster, J.H. In 1935, Burbank became one of the first cities in Southern California to have electric streetlights; this event marked the beginning of its growth as a major metropolitan area within Los Angeles County. In 1967, construction began on the Hollywood Freeway which will eventually connect Los Angeles with Ventura County and Interstate 5; this freeway would later become known as I-5W or "the Hollywood Freeway". On January 1, 1984, Burbank became one of twelve cities in LA County that were incorporated as part of the Municipal Reform Act which added more local governance over aspects such as zoning and transportation policies
