The first store opened in what is now downtown Burbank on May 12th 1887 by A C White & Son grocery chain owners Wm & Milly Harriman and Harry Blackmon Sr.. The town was platted as part of a larger development called Commerce Row which included parts of Pasadena, Glendale, Lynwood, Monterrey and other towns across Southern California at that time In 1907 John Sayers developed an agricultural land grant comprising much of today's northwest Burbank but not all including what is now Downtown Burbank where he started construction on his mansion eventually finished in 1912 known as Sayers Tower The Cotton Club which became famous for its pioneering nights out moved into its current building at 7951 Hollywood Blvd NW in 1927 becoming one of only a few "big" American nightclubs survive into adulthood It was also during this time that Hollywood achieved its popular name for being "the world's greatest entertainment capital". During World War II many movie stars spent time at Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures or Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios while others created new production companies such as United Artists or Republic Pictures . During World War II, Universal produced several top-grossing wartime movies such as "Casablanca", "Hollywood Canteen"'s "Ipcress File" and "Bombshell". After the war, Universal shifted its focus towards feature films such as "Escape from New York City", "It Happened One Night" and++; however, it failed to make a major dent in the box office until the late 1960s when it acquired Columbia pictures. In 1985, Universal merged with Time Warner Entertainment to form Turner Entertainment Company which continues to operate today as one of Hollywood's leading entertainment companies
