In 1819, Antonio López founded Rancho La Breaguiña near today's intersection of Lankershim Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard. The town began as a simple village called Behrendsville with a population of fifty settlers in 1827. The main street that still exists in town - Beharndsville Avenue - was named for him. In 1851 John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill which became one of Northern California's largest cotton mills producing 300 acres (120 hectares) per day yielding two tons per acre In 1872 Elihu Root purchased Coyote Hills from Alvarado Ford for $20 000 cash plus five thousand acres (2200 hectares) of steppe country beyond Coyote Hills including much later Hollywood Bowl which he built himself on top of this land. He also acquired about twenty miles (40 km) north of downtown Los Angeles along with other properties including Beverly Hills, Harwood Canyon, Northridge and Westlake Village among others In 1902 City Council voted unanimously to rename Burbank "Los Angeles" following then-Mayor James Wickersham’s recommendation during a time when many cities were changing their names because they were feeling out whether or not they could support annexation into Los Angeles County . After protracted debate between various community groups over whether or not to change its name – some arguing that it should remain unincorporated rural Burbank while others argued for incorporation within the new city limits – finally on July 1st 1907 voters approved an ordinance adopting "Los Angeles" as its official name . Prior to this name change many residents had shortened their surnames such as Toomey or Tolmachowicz so as not associated with what they perceived as an already large city being renamed only for them

The area now known as Burbank was part of two counties named Rancho Cucamonga and Orange County. In 1881, a group of investors led by John Sutter arrived in what is now Burbank to purchase land for a new town site. They named their new town Sutterville after George Sutter, one of the original investors. In 1887, the residents of Sutterville voted to make their town an incorporated municipality. The name change was made official on July 4th, 1888. Today, much of what makes Burbank so unique has come from its location within easy commuting distance of Los Angeles and other major metropolitan areas. One result has been a dramatic increase in Burbank's population over the last several decades - from just over 100,000 people in 1980 to more than 211,000 people as of 2010! Additionally, this growth has brought many businesses and entrepreneurs to Burbank – including truck stop restaurant chains like Carl's Jr., Taco Bell and Quiznos – as well as fashion designers such as Neiman Marcus and H&M! With all these newcomers came a need for housing – something that had not yet become an issue in nearby Santa Monica or Westwood (with their high-density housing developments). To meet this need, City Council approved plans for a massive mixed-use project called Riverside Park/Highland Hills which will include 1 million square feet (100 acres) of commercial space; 615 homes; 5 story office buildings withATS or equivalent air conditioning; 2 football fields; 2 baseball diamonds; 2 tennis courts; 1 water park; 3 restaurants (including one flagship store); 3 music venues (including one mainstage arena); and 2 shopping malls (one anchored by Sears). The success story at Riverside Park/Highland Hills began with developer Lennar Corporation’s acquisition of assets from KeyBanknorthwest Bank back in 2002. Lennar quickly put together a team to develop the project: engineers Dave Hecht (formerly with Apple), Ryan Smith (formerly with Motorola), Donny Hathaway (from Northrop Grumman), Jay Pritzker (the founder of Hyatt Hotels) and Rick Riordan were all brought on board to help design features that would later be adopted by other developers around LOS Angeles County: open spaces surrounded by dense development allow streetscape width to be controlled while still preserving character set against towering tall buildings throughout neighborhoods adjacent thereto rather than having wide open expanses dominated primarily by tall buildings blocking views for neighbors nearby.; These same principles also applied when it came time to building units: each unit was designed around its occupant’s needs rather than following trends found elsewhere among similar projects being built at that time.; This resulted in some truly innovative designs like Highline Village which features underground parking levels beneath[dense] office towers complete with retail floorplates that are exposed when exiting via elevator shafts.; And finally there’s RiverWalk which links numerous neighborhoods together through extensive walkways & greenbelts.,
