Burbank, California was founded on April 12, 1909 by John H. Burbank and his wife Alma. The city is located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County and is today a thriving metropolis with a population of over 650,000 people. The history of Burbank can be traced back to 1847 when Mexican land grants were made to Spanish-speaking settlers in the area. In 1853, the first post office was established in what is now Burbank. By 1870, the population had increased to 1,500 people. In 1880, an early settler named Peter Franchot built a large rancho near present-day Warner Avenue and Western Avenue. Over the next few years various other ranchers joined this group including Jens Smedberg who bought the rancho from Franchot in 1881. On October 15th of that year Smedberg donated 2 square miles (5 km2) of his property - which included parts of what is now Burbank - to the City for $1,000 cash and 10 acres (4 ha). This donation made Burbank its official name although it would not be granted city status until 1912 when it passed through annexation by Los Angeles. In 1888 William Mulholland purchased 6 square miles (15 km2) east of downtown from Manuel Reyes for $600 cash and 5 acres (20 ha). This transaction made Mulholland one of the largest landowners in town at that time as well as adding muchneeded commercial space to what was then an unincorporated community known as Rancho La Brea Adobe! By 1902, residents had come up with a name for their new town – “Burbank” – after John H.Burban who also contributed $10 towards its development! However, there was stiff competition for naming rights among local businesses and citizens before finally being chosen as “Burbank” by popular vote on November 16th 1922! The early days of Burbanks growth were marked by several important milestones such as: incorporation on January 3rd 1905; opening of First National Bank on December 5th 1907; establishment of Better Homes & Gardens Department Store on February 25th 1914; construction of Hollywood Bowl on May 17th 1928; becoming a chartered city with responsibility for zoning laws on July 1st 1938; designation as oneof five cities within Los Angeles County during World War II; hosting numerous civic events throughout the years such as Memorial Day Parade etc.; becoming part Of Regional Services District #8 in 1969 which provided social services to low income residents within Southern California During recent decadesburban has seen many changes resulting in many jobs being created along with significant redevelopment projects including: urban renewal project which added 4500 homes between 1965-1980 ; completionof 2020 Northridge Mall project which includes more than 2000 apartments, condos & stores . burban continues to grow day by day making it one top priority destination for locals & visitors alike!
