Buena Park, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 25,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Central Coast of California and bordered byOntario to the northeast and Riverside to the southwest. The first people to live here were Ohlone Native Americans who lived in caves near what is now Buena Park Boulevard and Olive Avenue. They hunted game and gathered plants and fruits from nearby oak trees. The area was first known as Pueblo de Santa Ana (White Pueblo) because it was part of Spanish Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (founded 1769). In 1821, Mission San Gabriel withdrew all its mission Indians except for some traders living around present-day Ontario Street. A year later Mexico gained independence from Spain, which caused outrage among many Californians because Mexican land had been grabbed without their consent. The Mexican government decided that all American citizens were required to pay taxes—anodized silver dollars—to support Mexico’s new government even though they didn’t own any of it. Many American colonists responded with anger and defiance, so Mexican troops invaded northern California in 1825 under General Vicente Guerrero to remove them from power. As part of this campaign, units of Mexican military forced open several Indigenous settlements in what is now Buena Park including Mission Dolores (established 1776), La Honda (1784), Ahuenga Heights (1811), Rancho Palos Verdes (1837), Playa del Carmen Viejo/Old Playa (1868–1912) In 1828 an act of Congress called the Land Act authorized Ulysses S Grant to purchase 600 square miles within Los Angeles County for $5 million more than he had originally offered two years earlier when he became President James K Polk’s Secretary of War under then-Governor Manuel Micheltorena. Grant chose Buena Park over other offers primarily because it would be near his home base at Mount Wilson Observatory on Olvera Street in Pasadena; by doing so he could watch celestial displays firsthand! After surveying the area for himself throughout late summer 1829,Grant designated parcels totaling 640 acres for a town site on May 14th or 15thMDT ().
