In 1932, LAGC organized a national rifle championships at La Jolla Beach on Long Island under the auspices of the American Rifle & Pistol Assn., Inc. At La Jolla beach, LAGC's first championship event attracted top shooters from around the country. The event continued annually until 1959 when it moved to Bakersfield CA because of gun control restrictions placed on Californians by then-Governor Pat Brown.
