Brea is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 24,045 at the 2010 census. It is part of the LA metropolitan area. The first people to live in Brea were the Tongva people who lived on Rancho Santa Margarita before being pushed out by the Spanish in 1776. They returned after Mexican independence and built a small settlement here called San Gabriel because they thought it would be easier to get food from Mission Dolores than from Point Mugu on the mainland. A post office was established at Brea on March 6, 1873, and remained open until May 15, 1907. The first school in Brea was opened for white children in 1879 by Mrs. Halsey Jepson as an annex to Mrs. Cook's School for Negroes which had been founded two years earlier near downtown Los Angeles. In 1886, white students began attending John Bogle High School while black students continued attending Mrs. Cook's School until 1928 when it became known as Hollywood High School (now Loyola Marymount University). In 1922, Brea voters passed a resolution urging then-Governor of California William Richardson to establish a university in the city and he appointed Professor Charles Wirtz as its first president with a mandate to create "the most complete college west of Chicago". On November 3, 1923 – one year after Wirtz's inauguration – Brea Polytechnic Institute (later known as Southern California State Teachers College) was founded with 1½ acres of land donated by Mr. George Kapp and Drs., James Fenton and Hyrum Stephens; the site now includes both campuses of USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts & Sciences and Joint Center for Continuing Education & Learning Corporation (formerly Southern California State University - Fullerton). Classes first commenced at SCCL on December 6th 1923 under Instructor: Drs James Fenton and Hyrum Stephens with Campus Location: 5100 West Slauson Ave #1010 South Quantico Rd #8000 North Glendale Blvd #4000 East La Crescent Ave #3000 Westchester Avenue campus moved from original site due to numerous complaints from students about high noise levels within building during morning classes! In 1941 SCCL became parts of UCLA when that institution split into three parts following an administrative dispute between Chancellor Ralph Bunche (UCLA), Vice Chancellor Edwin Whitehurst (UCLA) and Trustees Irwin Cotler(UCLA) And Jane Goodall(SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE). After World War II ended enrollment at UCLA dropped significantly however SCCL still enjoyed goodctorial support until 1978 when Chancellor Pat Brown took over responsibilities from Chancellor Whitehurst making SCCL an all-campus college once again sharing campuses with UCLA institutions like Fullerton/UC Riverside etc.).
