Brea, California is a city located in Orange County, California. It was founded on August 29, 1899 by the Breas Brothers, who named it after their maternal grandmother and aunt, Bertha Brea. The population of Brea was estimated to be over 200,000 at the end of 2010. According to the US Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6 square miles (15 km²). The city is located on Interstate 5 between Anaheim and Santa Ana and is bounded by Fullerton Boulevard to the south, Garden Grove Avenue to the east and west, and Menlo Park Boulevard to the north. The center of Brea is defined by three streets: Eastman Avenue NE-SW (formerly 1st Street), Main Street SE-NE (now Washington Place), and North American Way NE-SW. All three streets are one block wide with a median running along their entire length. Brea’s history goes back before its founding date – it was known as “Boothby” from 1848 until it became part of Orange County in 1857. In 1870, two brothers named Boothchandler purchased land near what would become Brea from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel for $2 per acre ($10 per hectare). They built a small cabin there and called it “Boothby” because they had taken up farming there originally. In 1898, John Fenton bought 2 acres (0.8 km²) adjacent to where Boothchandler had owned his land for $3 per acre ($12 per hectare). Fenton renamed it “Brea” after his mother-in-law Bertha BREA who he married in 1892 at Stonington Beach Baptist Church in Newport News Virginia while she was working as an interpreter for entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie in Los Angeles County during the 1880s; she later moved to Calabasas California with him when he founded Carnegie Steel Company in 1901.)
