Brea, California is a city in Southern California and the most populous city in the Antelope Valley of Northern California. The population was 128,821 as of 2017. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Sacramento and 30 miles (48 km) south-southeast of Los Angeles. The first humans to live in Brea were members of the Gabrielino people who populated what is now Orange County around 10,000 years ago. They were followed by other groups such as the Ohlone and Pomo people who lived until 1879 when they were forced out by Mexican settlers. A group of Mormon missionaries came to this area in 1851 and began farming land that later became Brea. The first post office was established in 1853, and named Brea after Anna Maria Breedlove, one of the converts from Mormonism to Catholicism who also donated land for a church building on Second Street near present-day State Route 16. In 1872–73, breakeven voting occurred for breakeven positions on both countywide and town levels; however no records exist to back up this claim. In 1902, local publisher Waddell Hite opened his publishing house at 1070 S Broadway which would become known as "The Tribune". In 1907 Mayor John Fenton renamed Highland Avenue in honor of General James Hallett who had been killed during World War I while commanding American forces stationed at El Centro Field near present-day San Bernardino County. On December 15th 1923 City Councilman Jock Mahoney proposed that Brea rename itself "City Of Angels" after all those listed above who had contributed something or had helped make it what it is today including then Supervisor Harry Reid's mother – Ethel Merman – frequently visiting him while he served on City Council where she chaired public works committees from 1951 until her death in early 1957 After many votes by councilmembers over two days an unanimous decision was made on December 17th to change Brea's name to Angel City! The citizens agreed with Mahoney’s proposal and quickly started working towards making their new city one full with businesses, residents &outhful programs etceteras so Angel City could be proud!

The area was first inhabited by the Klamath people, who were known for their seafood production. In 1849, Brea became part of the United States when it was added to the territory of California. The city was named after brea creek, which ran through the community. The population grew rapidly during the 1890s due to new arrivals from Europe and Asia. By 1910, Brea had reached its peak with over 20,000 residents. However, World War I caused a decline in population as many people left for military service. During World War II, Brea experienced a rise in population as war-time businesses increased production. After the war, there was a decline in population until the late 1990s when it started to grow again.
