In 1916, Brea became a city after its incorporation by voters. He writes that "the process [of cityhood] began with voter petitioning in 1916 and continued through ratification by the City Council in 1937." Wickersham notes that many factors contributed to Brea's growth during this time including advances in transportation, suburban development around it, increased military spending throughout Southern California due to World War II, and an expanding economy that attracted new businesses and workers to Orange County. He also observes that Brea became increasingly ethnically diverse as it transitioned from a largely Anglo-American community into one with sizable African American and Latino populations later on in its history. Following annexation by Los Angeles County in 1959,Brea experienced rapid growth thanks in part to heavy military spending throughout the county which led to numerous new factories being built there such as Lockheed Martin Corporation’s Skunk Works plant which developed jet aircraft plants for both Boeing and Lockheed Martin; Verizon Communications’s first microwave network expansion project; Western Electric’s closure of their research center at Saugus; General Dynamics Corporation’s establishment of their Business Electronics Center within Breaside Park; LAX Airport becoming more congested with more commercial jets en route thereto; and increasing calls for urban planning initiatives within then-City Manager Jack Nichols' administration which culminated with Nichols' election as Mayor of Los Angeles following Measure R (1978).

This story is perpetuated by legend that when actor Cecil B DeMille visited Hollywood he changed his name to Normandie so that no one would think he was blacklisted because of his race at the time.. In reality DeMille only changeto keep his true identity secret from production officials during filming... As Hollywood became known around the world it quickly acquired other nicknames includingbanana republic (1902-1904), movie colony (1920s), golden age(1930s-1950s), American dream city(1960s-1970s) etc., but never lost its soulful quality or popularity among Californians or anyone else looking for a place where they could raise their families and live out an American dream."
