A group of Mission Indians from Monterey Colony arrived in 1821 and laid out a town called "Palo Alto" near where Main Street currently stands south of Empire Boulevard on Orange Avenue; however, this settlement did not take hold because Palo Alto lacked water resources that would have allowed for growth. In 1847, Mexican land grants were made to José Antonio Vargas and Manuel Nieto by Governor Pio Pico for their rancho "La Paloma". In 1851 Ventura family member Mariano Rivera purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) north-northeast of Villa Park from José Joaquin Miller for $2,000 (). Rivera named his new property "Brea" after his wife's sister (actually her brother-in-law's daughter). In 1870s bream fishing became an important commercial activity with local businesses processing catches into bait or feed items such as soybeans or flour for export to Japan and other countries around the world.
