Brawley, California was founded in 1876 by John C. Brawley and his family. A century later, the town has had a significant impact on the history of scopes. In 1876, Brawley opened a small shop called the Optic Shop on 12th Street in what is now known as Brawley Plaza. TheOptic Shop was the first optical store in the area and it served as a starting point for many local entrepreneurs who would start their own businesses in this early period of American Optical History. In 1929, Guggenheim Museum purchased several acres adjacent to 12th Street plaza from John C. Brawley’s widow and daughters for $75,000 dollars. This donation allowed Guggenheim to begin construction on their first new building on the campus of UC Berkeley. The museum expansions that followed would include additional buildings onsite including an Observatory (1948), Alice Paul Gallery (1963), and Sculpture Garden (1997).Over time, Brawley has been home to some of America’s most accomplished optics researchers and collectors including Dr. Edward Kappeler (1905-1993), Dr. Julius Neumann (1897-1966), Professor Norris Ewing Seager Jr.(1933-2008), Professor Willis Warshaw(1920-2006) and Dr.-Ing./Dr.-Pes./Prof.-Univ.-Berlin/Drs._Karl Friedrich von Faber-Castell(1868-1936). Many of these individuals have lefttheir lasting legacy not just within optics but also within American culture itself through their contributions to museums such as Guggenheim Museum or University of California at Berkeley where they were associated with various faculties or departments over the years. Today, Brawley continues to play an important role in optics research and education with its world class research facilities as well as its strong support network of community members who contribute their expertise and knowledge relevant to optical science worldwide
