Brawley, California is a small town in the Unincorporated community of McKinney, Texas. The population was 1,724 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico just south of Corpus Christi and east of Laredo. The first people to live in Brawley were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near present-day McKinney. They built their village on an island in the bayou named for them, Brawley Island. The first white settlers arrived in 1846 when John Fenton and his family drove out what is now the town's namesake Indian chief, Kaw-Tin-Ai (Kamikaze). In 1847 William Ritchie founded what is today Ritchieville on land that had been owned by Kaw-Tin-Ai. In 1886 US Representative James Wickersham organized a group of Texans to purchase 108 acres (40 ha) north of present day Brawley from José Márquez y Aguayo so that they could build a new county courthouse there. Named after him – County Courthouse Park – this property forms much of downtown Brawley today. That same year Judge George Epps bought 640 acres (240 ha) southeast of present day Brawley from Antonio Vásquez de la Reyna for $5,000 to create what would become Maverick Ranch Open Space Preserve & Wildlife Preserve. This area includes most everything within walking or biking distance today including severalhistoric houses dating back to 1871: One known as “Old Hickory” was built by Jepson’s brother John Atherton and later occupied by Judge George Epps before being sold in 1903 to Drury Gentry; another known as “New Madrid” was built by Ochiltree during the Mexican War and later acquired by Captain Hildebrandt Mackenzie; still others dating back to 1800 include “Hickory Hills” which was home to Colonel Joaquin Miller prior to his surrender at Palo Alto; while still others such as “Happy Valley” date back only as far as 1860 when it served as ranch headquarters for General Sam Houston
