Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,000 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Lodi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brawley was founded in 1905 by John Laughlin and his family as a small ranch named after nearby Butte Creek. The Laughlin Ranch became an agricultural center for Kern County. In the 1920s, Brawley's population grew to over 10,000 when local farmers moved into the area from other parts of Kern County. By 1930, Brawley had been renamed for its founder and first mayor William J. Brawley (1863-1939). The town changed hands many times over the years and lost its downtown district in the 1970s but has since regained much of its former glory thanks to efforts by Mayor Neil Maughan and Other Council Members Bob O'Connell and Rick Bayless. The community built its first school in 1907 on what is now Main Street; it burned down in 1916 but was rebuilt with a new facade and name that still stands today: Bakersfield Junior College High School (now known as Katella Middle School). In 1957-58, during drought years when water availability dwindled throughout most of Kern County due to lack of storm events or fires on hillsides which would release available water resources under normal conditions--large rainevents occurred at about regular intervals around this time--the City Council voted unanimously to rename both schools "Drought University" after then Governor Pat Brown (D), who had vetoed legislation authorizing appropriations for funds for Southern California's Community Development Centers despite evidence that these centers were needed more urgently than ever given escalating drought conditions throughout most of southern California! In 1978-79 Mayor O’Connell replaced Mr. Bayless as Chairperson of the Board because he could no longer serve fulltime due to prior health problems; however Mr. Bayless continued as Chairman emeritus until his death in 2009 at age 93½ months old! Brawley is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Coachella Valley region. The first permanent settler in Brawley was George A. Hitchman in 1859. He and his family built a cabin on what is now the east side of Main Street. They raised chickens and pigs, but no crops were grown because of the difficult soil conditions. In 1861, Jno. Hinkle built a cabin on the west side of Main Street where he operated a wagon shop until 1865 when he bought land to build an adobe house which became known as "the old Hitchman House". In 1867 Wm. Ladd opened a general store on south Main Street which became known as "the Ladd Store". In 1872 John Pritchard established an apothecary business at 204 S Hall St., later renamed "Pritchard's Pharmacy". By 1880, there were twelve farms with one or more stores in Brawley; three churches; five schools; six blacksmiths; two harness shops; four printers; and twenty-four laborers employed in various trades or businesses such as agriculture, banking, carpentry/turning out shoes and clothing for local customers or working for ranches outside of Brawley limits. There were also ten residents who rented from farmers within Brawley boundaries: Arthur Cramer (tenant #1), Hiram Berry (tenant #2), Denton Worth (tenant #3), James Fenton (tenant #4), Charles Goodyear (tenant #5), John Sloan ( Tenant #6) and Abram Wetzel (Tenant#7). That year too saw an important development as Chas. Weiser moved to Brawley from Redding with his family in February 1881 after selling their farm near Yucca Valley to purchase land hereabouts which they used for grazing purpose only until 1886 when they decided to establish themselves permanently as farmers by purchasing additional acreage nearby including that now occupied by the Weiser Farm Museum & Historical Park located off State Route 66 just east of town Limits between Halls Ranch Rd./State Route 62 & Lankershim Blvd./US 395
Brawley, California was founded in 1879 by John Brawley and his wife Eliza. The first post office in the area was established in 1880. The town growth primarily due to the lumber industry which thrived until the early 1900s. In 1907, Brawley incorporated as a city and began experiencing rapid population growth. However, during World War II the city experienced significant destruction as it was used as a concentration camp for Japanese Americans. In 1948, Brawley became an unincorporated community when its incorporation was discontinued.
