Brawley is a small town in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,747 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hanford-Laguna City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was platted in 1888 by Captain George Stephenson and Wm. H. Brawley as a "township in the borough of Hanford" on the south bank of the Lick Creek south of present-day Brawley Dam. The name "Brawley" is an old spelling of "Bellevue". In 1912, it became an incorporated village when it had a population of 581 people; this number decreased to 486 people in 1920 and then to its current size of 1,747 people in 2000. The most recent growth has been within annexed unincorporated areas adjacent to Brawley Village, which has added over 100 residents since 2000. According to the US Census Bureau, thecommunity has a total area of , all land public domain or owned by the National Park Service (NPS). As with most settlements founded after 1890 following federal land acquisition policies under President Ulysses S. Grant's Executive Order 9066, many acres were donated by local farmers or ranchers who saw opportunities for farming and grazing on newly acquired public lands now comprising most or all of modern-day Inyo County and portions of Mono County (the largest being Antelope Valley Ranch Nation State Park located approximately east-northeast of Brawley). Some private landowners also contributed parcels including much smaller neighborhoods near Big Bend Reservoir on San Miguel River today known as Crescent City adjacent to Ranchería de las Palomas Mexican rancho just east fromnowhere along South San Miguel Road between Mojave National Monument line north (and across from what used to be downtown Crescent City) and about midway between Badwater Basin park boundary east side(southwest corner) & Nevada state line west side(northwest corner) inside present day Capitol Reef National Monument boundaries; these tracts are now known as Little Tuolumne Meadows., Canoga Park Township southwest corner), Tehachapi Valley northwest corner), Riverside Canyon northeast corner), Owens Lake northeast corner), Glen Rose southeast corner)), Yucca Valley northwest corner)). Most recently two large tracts adjoining Indian Wells: Twin Peaks Wilderness Preserve lying northwesterly along eastern edge ± 400 acres +/- 120 acres +/- 160 acres formerly part Visalia Oaks Ranch located easterly ± 320 acres +/- 480 acres once part Open Space Reserve managed by BLM + 276 contiguous acress previously part Coyote Flat Wildlife Management Area managed by NPS - later developed into Las Animas Desert Preserve managed by BLM + 636 contiguous acress which include Chiricahua Mountains Ecoregionmanaged jointly by BLM & NPS). Much remains undeveloped even though there are numerous potential agricultural uses for larger parcels such as those mentioned above because government mandates have limited development possibilities beyond existing roads and railroads while privatelyowned land presents unique opportunities for hunting/gathering/fishing/mining that have not yet been explored/developed despite many offers from interested parties-. nonetheless tens if not hundreds more potential uses exist waiting to be realized given good stewardship
