Brawley is a small town in Kern County, California, located about an hour south of Bakersfield. The population was 2,731 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Delano Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Brawley were members of the Spanish mission San Gabriel Arcangeli in 1776. The mission was abandoned in 1836 and most of the original buildings were destroyed by fire. A newMission San Gabriel Arcangeli was built nearby and it remains active today as a Catholic church and cultural center. In 1850, residents of the small town petitioned the United States government for land to be granted them near Fresno because they felt that their area would become too isolated without access to markets or other outside interests. The US government granted them 3 square miles (8 km2) of land on which they erected a logging camp called "Brawley" after one of their own citizens, John Brawley. At that time there were no towns within Kern County established by act or ordinance; all settlements were founded by special grant from Congress based on considerations such as population density and railroad potential. The first post office in Brawley opened in 1868 under the name "Fresno". In 1881, it changed its name to "Bakersfield", after then-Governor Arthur Buchanan's proclamation designating Kern County as a territory for agricultural development with jurisdiction over everything east of Interstate 5 near Tulare Lake (now Inyo National Forest). A large dam across Musselshell Creek upstream from where Brawley now stands began construction during World War II to provide irrigation water for farms downstream; when completed, this created one of Kern County's largest lakes before it became mostly diverted for use elsewhere during peacetime until restoration began in the late 1990s following public outcry over environmental damage caused by wartime irrigation practices. After the war ended in 1918, many businesses closed down but new ones such as a meatpacking plant and cotton gin quickly formed along with new homes which continued to be constructed throughout the 1920s until they reached their peak around 1930-1932 when they started to decline rapidly due to population growth rates typical of coastal towns at that time. Despite these problems however, by 1933-1934 Bawleys economy had begun to recover thanks largely to increased tourism which had become increasingly popular due to its natural beauty while still being affordable compared to other coastal townships at that time
