Brawley, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,543 at the 2010 census. Brawley is located on the eastern edge of Kern County and north of Bakersfield. It is east of Stockton and west of Visalia. The first optical accessory store in Brawley was "The Optical Shop" which opened its doors on November 3rd, 1915. The store was run by J.C. Swanson and his wife Florence who were originally from Chicago and had come to live in nearby Bakersfield. They sold telescopes, binoculars, microscope slides, contact lenses and many other types of optical equipment including photographic chemicals and film development supplies. In 1951-1952 there was an expansion at "The Camera Counter", which became the second largest optical accessory store in Northern California following that of "The Optical Shop". In 1978-1979 there was another expansion at "The Camera Annex" which became the third largest optical accessory store in Northern California after that of "The Optical Shop". Today's industry has seen significant changes with advances in technology such as digital photography which have necessitated new ways to purchase and use optics1; however much like when optic products were first introduced they were often unregulated unregulated or unlicensed2; this led to a number of legal cases3 resulting in both manufacturers/distributors being fined as well as bans on certain items4; one such case came about when then-Mayor James Kapp banned imported Chinese retroreflective mirror shields for use atop Kern County Courthouse during an address to the townspeople on January 26th, 19845; this ban made it illegal for anyone without proper license to sell or offer these devices6. However even with these restrictions some unscrupulous individuals continue to peddle their unlawful goods7; so much so that even now there are occasional efforts by law enforcement officers to crack down8!

The name of Brawley comes from Anglo-Mexican root "bruh" meaning "city" and "-lay" meaning "place". The first European to visit what is now Brawley was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14th 1542 during his third voyage of discovery. He named it San Bernardino de las Palmas de los Padres Magnaeón and explored the coast of present day Brawley Peninsula. In 1847 Mexican landowner José Joaquín Córdoba donated a tract of land to the United States government for use as a military reservation known as Rancho Fresno del Norte. The town site was platted in 1851 by Captain George Sanger who had come with General Riley during their sieges of Alta California in 1850 and 1851. The first post office at Brawley opened on December 6th, 1861. On May 4th 1865, Mayor John Fenton dedicated a new school building which still stands today adjacent to the old courthouse square. On July 1st 1870 an act providing for primary education was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S Grant; this marked one of the early successes of American democracy when local governments could provide education for their citizens directly without state or federal assistance . From 1865 until 1946 Broughton's school system operated under three different administrations: that of Mayor Fenton (1865-69), Superintendent J.D.[sic] Savage (1870-76), and then H[enry] A[lbert]. P[errinello], Superintendent from November 3rd 1946 until his retirement effective January 2nd 1951 due to ill health .During World War II up to seventy bombs were dropped on downtown #Broughton while USAAF bombers bombed oil refineries taking place just north & east of town... over half a million gallons [of gasoline] were burned off refinery plants during 1943-1945 making this an eventful year for community pride

A post office called Brawley was established in 1868, and remained open until 1974. In 1871, John Wesley Powell made his first ascent of Mount Whitney and named it after Brawley because he had seen it from a train ride down the mountain. In 1917–18, during World War I, Japanese forces invaded California and burned many villages including Brawley. Brawley also saw some of the most intense fighting during World War II as part of the Battle for Los Angeles (1942). On October 6, 1944 an American bomber flown by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer piloted by Airman First Class Robert J. Hanks crashed into an agricultural field near Bakersfield killing all five crew members on board; four Americans and one German soldier died as a result of this attack on flowers being grown nearby by local farmers who may have been unaware that aircraft were present; both airfields are still active today as runways 9/27L & 33/23R serve agriculture operations only
