In 1885, Brawley was founded as a small town in the Mojave Desert. Today, Brawley is a city of over 100,000 people located in Fresno County, California. The cityname comes from the Spanish word for " canyon ", and it has been said that the name originated from the fact that there were many canyons in the area. This was also when Triggermania began - Gun Triggers were being manufactured all over Southern California!!! On July 3rd 1907 Ernest Hemingway stopped by Brawley on his way south for parts unknown... he must have liked what he saw because he set up shop here permanently!!!!!!

Brawley is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,922 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Chico metropolitan area. The name "Brawley" means "settlement by the Big Pines". The first humans to live in what is now Brawley were Paiute Indians. In 1847, when Gold was discovered in California, prospectors from nearby Tomahawk met near the mouth of Chico Creek and decided to start a new settlement there. Names for this new community included Big Piney Fork and Rifle Butte because of the high mountains around it. The site chosen for Brawley was on Rancho San Vicente de la Bahia (now part of Kern County). This grant came to George Atherton and his brother John Atherton after they married Maria Menendez de Argudo y Ocampo on December 12, 1799. They named their rancho San Vicente de las Palomas (later Rancho Atwater) after their patron saint: St Vincent of Padua. The brothers built a adobe hacienda south of present-day Brawley on what would become known as Rancho Atwater before selling it in 1827 to José Joaquin Murillo y Godoy who renamed it Rancho San Francisco del Norte (now part of Melrose Park). In 1849, Provisional Government troops burned down the town's only brick building during an uprising against Mexican rule that followed General Antonio Mora's invasion of California; however no one was killed or injured as a result. On July 20, 1851, Henry Benedict Palmer purchased 4 acres north of present-day Brawley from José Joaquin Murillo y Godoy for $100 cash plus 10% interest with power to purchase more land at any time; he called this tract Rancho Los Nietos (later renamed Adobe Valley). Palmer opened up some pastures there in 1863 and began marketing hay and cattle to settlers east of Kern River who had emigrated overland from New Mexico during the 1850s westward into what is now Southern California under United States government auspices called Manifest Destiny. He also developed neighboring Adobe Valley into a dry farming district with large fruit trees that yielded high grades for export across Ulysses S Grant’s Pacific Railroad network which connected Northern Mexico with Southern California through Fresno and Visalia Fields between 1865 and 1880 . In 1915 placer mining operations led by Hiram Bingham resulted in discovery of large deposits not far from present-day Brawley including significant amounts asbestos which eventually led to its occupational use throughout much of North America until recently . Today about two thirds all asbestos found worldwide comes from various sites within three miles (5 km) or less radius of where it was mined

It is part of the Bakersfield–Murphy Area Combined Statistical Area. The community began as an agricultural town in 1907 when George H. Brawley founded a company to provide irrigation water for his Rancho San Pedro property in what is now Brawley. In 1925, Harry Caulfield developed a small oil field near present-day Brawley, which led to its incorporation as acity in 1951 by then-mayor Arturo Lopez; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of the newly formed Kern County when it was split from Fresno County. The first people who lived here were Native Americans who hunted game and gathered plants and nuts during period of great drought called "Canoga Kaapana" or "Great Drought". In 1867 John Sutter started ranching here on lands he acquired from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena following his successful attempt to establish a new settlement at Yuma on Arizona's east side; this area later became known as Sutterville after him. A post office was established at Brawley in 1907 and remained open until 1912; it was moved to nearby Enterprise two years later because of the growing town's growth around irrigated agriculture with little industry available outside of older communities like Marengo, Big Bear Lake, and Mono Valley (now Claremont). In 1926 together with other cities within Kern County – Clovis (later Lancaster), Coahuila (later Chiang Mai), Corona (later Hanford) – Brawley formed what would become Kern County's first government; government officials included mayor Arturo Lopez and six county commissioners. That year saw major construction projects initiated such as completion of both US Route 66 through downtown including its original alignment north-south instead of east-west which had been proposed by earlier mayors like Jack London; also that year saw completion of civic center which included three blocks bounded by First Street NW., Euclid Avenue NE., McFarlane Boulevard SW., 4th Street SE., modern day City Hall building stand today complete with art deco design that has been popularized since World War II including large neon signs above one level reading "BRAWLEY CITY GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS", even though they are not currently used for any public purposes On January 1st 1954 city boundaries were changed again expanding into unincorporated parts of much larger but adjacent towns while still keeping all elected officials within city limits making it one more politically cohesive entity within Kern County only if voters allowed it referendum passed November 5th 1957 establishing City Councils composed entirelyof members appointed by Mayor with no right ever given to recall or remove them without written approval from City Manager

It is located on the southern edge of Bakersfield and contains the unincorporated communities of Lawndale and Redding. The early history of Brawley can be found in its namesake, Robert E. Brawley, who settled there in 1857. The town was founded by John Fenton as an agricultural community on a farmstead owned by his father-in-law. By 1860 it had developed into a small center with a hotel and several stores. A post office was established at Brawley in 1865, and during the 1870s it became an important crossroads for travelers between Kern County and Tulare County. In 1881 the community took on its present name when General George Armstrong Custer arrived at Bakersfield from Battle Creek to inspect military operations in Kern County before his trip to San Francisco; he named the community after himself. By 1890 all but one of the original buildings within town had been destroyed by fire or vandalism; however, new construction began soon afterward and continued until 1901 when all but two of the remaining buildings were completed. At that time most of what is now Brawley was organized into three wards: Lawndale (northwest corner of Main Street east of Spring Street), Redding (southwest corner of Main Street east of Spring Street), and Harmon (east side of Main Street north of Railroad Avenue). The first school district was organized in 1903 when parts of Harmon were annexed to Redding; Redding District School #1 opened for students in September 1904. In 1907 Harmon received a water system from American Water Company which gave it civic status and made it possible for businesses within town to become part Of American Water Company - this also occasioned some construction projects around town including addition to courthouse notable for its Art Deco design features such as four granite spires reaching 653 feet high - these features remain today on both main streets/streets near courthouse although no longer used for commerce purposes due to population growth over time In 1912 additional parts northward along Railroad Avenue were annexed to Harmon creating another ward: North Central (the area now known as Midtown). Businesses within North Central started functioning as usual under their own boards beginning with incorporation proceedings held on October 15th 1913 which created North Central District School #2A - this school remains operational today inside Midtown Historic District boundaries
