That year, a group of men from Riverside County arrived and began to posts up land for sale on what is now the southeast corner of town. They named their new settlement "Brawley" after one of their members, who had seen a rise in prices for goods grown near San Diego and wanted to name a place that would reflect his success. The first gunsight used in what is now Brawley was an old fashioned type of reticle sight called a "pennant." It consisted of three circles surrounding an imaginary crosshairs at the rear, similar to those found on modern rifles. This type of sighting system was only used by riflemen and cavalry officers and not shotguns or handguns. However, it did prove useful enough for some people to set up shop hereabouts using this primitive form of target shooting technology. One resident who took advantage of this early setup was George Ahern who built his own sawmill close by and started producing lumber using this new technology. His sawmill quickly became one of the most important economic engines in town during its early years. After Ahern's venture proved successful, other entrepreneurs followed suit and soon there were several businesses operating out of town including a grocery store, hardware store, bakery, laundry & dryer services as well as two schools - one for children and one for adults - making Brawley an increasingly vibrant community center back then! During later years when things changed around here slightly more dramatically with the advent of automobiles coming into play things slowed down somewhat but never stopped altogether; it just wasn't as economically feasible anymore to have so many businesses concentrated all within such small geographic boundaries anymore! Brawley, California (population: 8,681) is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 1,977 at the 2010 census. It is located in the San Joaquin Valley southeast of Bakersfield and north of Stockton. The town was founded by Mormons who came to the area in 1847 as part of the Great Mormon Migration. In 1851, it became an independent station on the Southern Pacific Railroad between Bakersfield and Madera. The first post office opened in 1852. A flour mill was built in 1865 and remained active until 1923; it produced all-purpose flour until 1957. A water Pumpassee dam was completed in 1928 and continues to produce water for irrigation purposes today. The Brawley Dam Project began construction onsite in 1961 to impound Lake Oroville which forms much of eastern Kern County's border with Sacramento County. The project replaced an earlier pumping facility that had been inadequate for meeting demand from agriculture, municipalities, and industry; it also increased irrigation capacity for agriculture and other land uses within Kern County by more than 20%. Today, over 2 million acre feet (m 3 ) of water are pumped from Lake Oroville every day to support local crops such as almonds, grapes, alfalfa, cottonseed oilseed rape, strawberries, potatoes (Lapin), appleseed rapeseed oilseed rape (Spruce), corn Rape seedlings (Grape), eggserts (Eggerts), sweet pearseed rapeseed oilseed rape grown near Spruce Grove Utility District No 7; old world sunflower seed production also occurred near this site; these activities have resulted in creation of 5 new jobs since 2006 alone

A post office was established at Brawley in 1881, and mail brought back by horseback riders originated from here. By 1907 there were only six residents living here; however, with the opening of the Southern Pacific Railroad through Kern County in 1912, traffic increased considerably and soon enough a store and hotel had been built on Main Street. In 1916 Brawley became the seat for Kern County when it was organized. In 1933 Elmer Dyer founded Dyer-Litton Paper Company which represented paper manufacturers throughout Kern County. milling operations began shortly thereafter on nearby Clearwater Creek where water power now powered manyOfDyer-Litton's modern paper mills including one that still operates today - Elmer Dyer Paper Company (EAPD) - as well as other retail businesses such as hardware stores and service stations along Main Street during the early years of its operation. The company also constructed several dams across Clearwater Creek to produce power for its mills while allowing access to significant portions of rural Kern County for agricultural use until statehood created restrictions on this type of development in 1947. Other major employers during this time include United States Steel Corporation (USSC), which manufactured automobiles at their plants near Tecate before moving production to Pachuca Heights outside Chico; Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (GOTR) whose facility operated until 1971; Phelps Dodge Corporation’s paint plant at West John Day until it closed down in 1984; Christmas Tree Farm until it closed down in 2002; McComas’diesel engine plant which produced diesel fuel until 1998 when it switched over to biodiesel production; K&K Logistics “the truck stop” which served as a terminal for truckloads of goods coming into and out of Kern county beginning around 1960 before being replaced by Mapp Outdoor Living Center starting around 1990 Mapp Outdoor Living Center remains operational today with its own shopping mall complex just south of town limits housing Macy’s Department Store, Sears Department Store, JCPenney Place[anchor store], WeHo,[anchor store] Nordstrom Rack[anchor store], Belk department stores[anchor store], Dunham’s Sporting Goods[anchor store]; Old Navy[anchor store]; Camping World [campground]; Hwy 99 Truck Stop [interurban bus station]; numerous restaurant/bar complexes}; Today Brawley has only one business open: Walmart Supercenter
