Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Kern River and is bordered by Bakersfield to the north and east, Lancaster to the south and west, and Tulare County to the northwest. The community's history can be traced back to 1879 when American Joshua W. Brawley immigrated from England with his family. He started a flour mill in what is now Brawley and continued operations until it closed in 1950. In 1907-1911, Brawley served as a post office for Kern County. In 1951-1953, it was known as Redding; then it became Brawley after its first mayor was elected there in 1953. Brawley has two schools: White Sands Elementary School (grades K-4) and Blackhawk Intermediate School (grades 5-8). The community also has one church – First Baptist Church of Redding – which serves primarily as a social hall for residents. There are no public libraries or shopping malls in Brawley; however, there are several businesses that provide services such as restaurants and medical clinics within walking distance of the town center.

Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Tuolumne River, east of Bakersfield. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. The townsite of Brawley was platted in 1859 by John Sutter and named for Captain James Brawley who explored and surveyed the new territory then included in what is now Kern and Tulare counties. Captain Brawley had been imprisoned in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and his party made their way back to America via what is now Fresno County. When John Sutter's company discovered gold near present-day Roseville he called uponCaptainBrawleyto explorethe area for him. After some initial exploration they realized there were no nuggets to be found but they did find an oven used by Native Americans that still stands today at what is known as Pioneer Park about one mile west of current day Brawley. This site was also where government officials first met with Native American leaders about land grants that would eventually become ranchlands hereabouts including part of present day East Valley Ranch which straddles both banks of the Tuolumne River just south of downtown Brawley (north side). In 1872 CaptainJamesBraydon led a wagon train from Stockton through this area to Butte Creek on his way to prospect for gold near Mount Shasta. On September 25th he discovered gold while exploring Forks Canyon between Mount Shasta and Mount Strawn; it turned out to be $2 million worth of GOLD! At this point people started coming down from Sacramento looking for this beautiful ore body so many miles away only accessible by wagon or horseback ride given how difficult it must have been travel all that way! Unfortunately not everyone got rich off these Fortunes however because within a few years most everyone had left for various reasons such as overmuch sun exposure, warfare elsewhere etcetera so the original mining camp never really took off like some hoped it would since everything valuable had already gone before anyone even bothered going near it! In fact much later when railroads came into being things changed significantly as transportation became easier than ever before making these sorts of trips more feasible so today most people know nothing about those days except maybe a fond memory or two ;) On April 20th 1886 Major George Armstrong Custer died during an expedition against Sitting Bull’s Sioux Tribe northwest of buffalo country although less than a mile from where he believed gold might lay hidden; his death has been celebrated annually by bedraggled farmers driving their flocks past Lookout Pass National Monument northeast of town every year starting on April 20th until recently inclusive due mostly to tourism purposes!!! One thing we do know however its that almost immediately after his death many brave men and women responded under General Order No 998 providing military support should hostilities break out with any tribe along our border!!! Including Southern Californians like my great grandfather who served alongside Custer when he fought at Little Big Horn Battlefield southeast corner Of town
Brawley was founded by pioneers in 1847. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of gold at Siskiyou National Park in 1848. The population reached 1,000 in 1850 and 5,000 by 1860. Brawley became an important stop on the Oregon and California Railroad. In 1871, the railroad merged with the Central Pacific Railroad, which made Brawley one of its main hubs. By 1900, Brawley had over 20 businesses and a population of around 10,000.
