Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Bakersfield, within the Kern City limits. The first people to live in what would become Brawley were the Klamathas and Ohlone Indians. They arrived in 1847 from Northern California and built their villages on land that now includes much of downtown Brawley. The first post office was established in 1849 as Humboldt Bay Post Office. In 1853, a group of pioneers led by William Moulton bought 640 acres (248 ha) south of what is now downtown Brawley and started farming it. The name “Brawley” was given to them by General Nathaniel Lyon during his visit to this area in 1850. In 1863, Averill Harriman purchased 460 acres (220 ha) north of downtown Brawley from James Sibley for $1 million dollars and founded the city of Kernville along with it. Harriman named his new community after himself – “Brayly” – which means “breast or male breast” in English. By 1865, Kernville had a population of 2,500 residents and was considered to be the second largest city in California after San Francisco. In 1868 James Sibley sold 463 acres (218 ha) northeast of downtown Brawley to George Armstrong Crippen for $2 million dollars because he wanted to create an agricultural colony with irrigation facilities for growing crops such as grapes and wheat near Los Angeles proper. Crippen renamed his colony "Rancho Cordova" after Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's landed thereabouts two years earlier on November 30th 1542 during his attempt to establish a Fernando de la Renta Colony on North America's West Coast - fulfilling an early prophecy made by Catholic priest Fray Junipero Serra aboutgold being found near where he would later build Mission San Diego de Alcala). Rancho Cordova became one of the most significant ranchos in Mexican-American history due to its location: just outside present day Bakersfield across from Interstate 5; its size; its production capabilities; and its numerous connections with other ranches contiguous or nearby: including Chico ranch (northwest), Del Norte cattle ranch (southwest), Visalia sheepranch (northeast), Kingsbury oil field [now part of Jerryd Bay Oil Field], etc.. A suite development called "City Hall" overlooking I-5 was completed adjacent to US 101/I-580 exit ramp just northeastof railroad tracks entrance into town center on October 15th 1984 following plans submitted by then Mayor Tom Petty Sr./ wife Teresa Norris who served concurrently from 1978 until her death on December 12th 2001 prior thereto & daughter Molly Petty who succeeded her Mother upon her death also serving concurrent terms until December 2002 when those offices were combined under newly created position Of Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Kempf effective January 1st 2003 thru December 31st 2003

Brawley, California is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located about 24 miles east of Bakersfield and 14 miles northwest of Visalia. The population was 1,567 at the 2000 census. The first known inhabitants of what is now Brawley were the Ohlone people who lived along the San Joaquin River from about 1772 to 1823. A mission founded by Junipero Serra in 1788 near present-day Brawley began serving Native Americans until it closed in 1821. The town site was patented on December 12, 1847, by George C. Atchison and James H. Smith under the name "Atchison's Rancho". In 1850, when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in nearby Yuba City, miners called the new town "Brawley" after one of their own mines still exists today as part of Bullion Gulch State Park (though it is not mentioned in any local history books). In 1875, a post office was established at Brawley with Wm Sornberger as its first mail carrier; however, this service ceased operations on July 15th of that year due to low mail volume at that time. The first school opened for students in 1876; however it closed within one year due to lack of enrollment and money issues associated with construction costs for a new school building which never materialized. As early as 1886 there were rumors that an elementary school would be built near what is now downtown Brawley but no such development ever took place. In 1912 an Agricultural Experiment Station (now known as CAL FIRE) was established northeast of town and started experiments with growing cotton and other crops around what are now dairy barns on land owned by Hiram Gorman; these barns remain standing today adjacent to Interstate 5 south of town off State Route 99A (the old alignment between I-580 and I-5). In 1925 two large cemeteries—Mount Moriah Cemetery west side and Mount Hope Cemetery east side—were established just north if town limits; both are still extant today although neither has been used since then - only some remains remain from Mount Moriah which formed about 1800 acres when most area including present day Brawley was acquired by Kern County in 1888 while most mountain ranges were acquired by San Bernardino County circa 1890-1892 . All excepting some trees killed during World War II have been removed or replaced so there is little evidence remaining from those years save for a few casual mentions scattered throughout various local histories books etc.; all entities having died long ago leaving no living descendants anymore apart from a fewVisalia residents descended through direct lineages via shared ancestors going back over several hundred years or more
Brawley was founded in 1876 by George Brougham, a naturalized American citizen who had come to California as a prospector. The town grew rapidly and soon became the county seat of Kern County.
