Brawley's name comes from early pioneers who settled on its banks in 1853 and named it after John Brawley (1798-1871), an American fur trader and member of the United States Congress from New Mexico Territory. A post office called Brawley was established in 1854, and remained in operation until 1901. The first store in Brawley was built on Main Street in 1865 by Wm. Halsey & Bros., a wagon wheel dealership that later became the Halsey Brothers hardware store. The town had no school until 1876 when it opening up to students with help from Leland Stanford Sr.'s Great Western Railroad Company. In 1888, local businessmen formed the Kern County Board of Education and set about building a school for their children which still stands today as the Kern County High School District #1 Building on Highway 99 near downtown Brawley . In 1907, two brothers known as "the Amos Twins" opened up what is now known as The Antioch Restaurant on State Route 99 North which served as the nucleus for what would become downtown Brawley's restaurant industry including many family-owned businesses that continue to this day such as Donatellos Pizzaiola & Pasta , Golden Corral BBQ , etc. Bakery businesses like Mrs. Bennetts' Bakery were started prior to WWII; however they closed down during World War II due to lack of demand or bombing raids that destroyed their stores throughout California . civic boosters resurrected these stores starting right after war ended with new ovens, reopened shops/cafés etc., but failed to keep any long term success alive Today there are several small cafes open within walking distance of most businesses while larger chains have taken over Complete steak house / Chinese Buffet style restaurants westward along I-15 corridor . There has been significant growth lately for fast food restaurants with Dunkin' Donuts just across from downtown and KFC taking over much of east side block off US 101 next to large hotel development

Brawley is a small town located in Humboldt County, California. It was founded in 1868 by John Brawley and his family. The population of Brawley was 1,836 at the 2000 census. The history of Brawley is intertwined with that of its namesake, John Brawley. Born in 1814 in Hampshire, England, John emigrated to the United States in 1847 and soon started a successful business career as a postmaster and farmer. He married Anna Maria (née Ladd) in 1850 and they moved to Brawley where they would live until their death in 1902. A Presbyterian minister, Rev. Wm. Ransom petitioned the state legislature to name the town after him in 1889 but it failed to pass muster; instead, he was given honorary citizenship by the town board. In 1901, Anna Maria's brother Emanuel purchased the farmstead which now sits on U Street near Main Street andWelcome Center for restoring historic buildings from within-the-town limits including Mrs.'s boardinghouse (now called "AnnaMaria House"), blacksmith shop (now "Emanuel forge"), livery stable (now "John Martin stable"), grocery store/butterfly restaurant ("The Butterfly", now closed), blacksmith shop building (now home of Northcoast Antiques), millinery store/gallery/"Fridays at Fritzi" (later changed to "Doris Fridays") and Baptist Church - all were added to the list of properties preserved as part of Historic District #2."
