They built a hacienda near present day Fullerton. However, it was not until after the Mexican-American War that most of the settlers started arriving and establishing themselves in this area. In 1881, James A. Hutton founded Jardine-Hutton Clothing Manufacturing Company which manufactured overalls and other clothing products for local farmers and their families. This company continued to operate until 1964 when it merged with another clothing manufacturer, Swenzer & Hutton Corporation (SWHC). Today, Jardine-Hutton remains an important part of San Bernardino County community life through its social programs and charitable work such as numerous soup kitchens and homeless shelters across the county. During World War II many local businesses took on patriotic roles both locally and nationally by manufacturing military uniforms for troops stationed in San Bernardino County as well as supplying food to soldiers deployed overseas. Some notable companies that made contribution include: First National Bank (now Wells Fargo), Hughes Aircraft Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Raytheon Co., Western Electric Co., Wacoal Inc., Sysco Inc., Bryant Shoes & Booties Ltd., Cement Pipe & Machine Works Incorporated (later Century Cement), Southern Pacific Railroad (later CSX) Depot No.-2 Building at 1201 Nueces Street in Brawley since 1933; Wernham Jones Bakery & Cafe serving high school students from grades 9–12 since 1936; Cowles Tire along I-15 West near full service station from 1951 until 1984 when cowledtire stopped operations; Pinnacle Broadcasting Corporation providing live TV coverage of major college football games during seasons 1957–1965 from various locations including Geyer Plaza Shopping Center on State Route 69 west of town; US Custom House - now Veterans Affairs Medical Center #1 - on 4th Street east of town originally built in 1886 as Customs House No.-2; three churches: First Baptist Church - now St Jerome's Catholic Church (); Second Baptist Church (); Methodist Episcopal Church (); all closed or have been demolished: First Presbyterian Church (), Second Presbyterian Church (), Methodist EpiscopalChurch ()); two schools: Our Lady's School () Andover Learning Academy () also closed or have been dismantled: Our Lady's School () Andover Learning Academy (). It should be noted that there are still some residents living within Brawley whose ancestors originated here before 1860 although most residents today can trace their roots back only to 1915 or later! The post office at Brawley was established on July 10, 1870, but did not open until November 1st due to lack of mail carriers available at the time! The first postmaster was Mrs Anna Ladd who served from 1870–1875 then Mrs Stone from 1876–1879 then Mrs Hattie Maynard from 1880–1885 before being replaced by Mrs Mabel Borden effective February 14, 1886 (). When postal services were discontinued following World War II they were provided by Sheriff’s Department vehicles utilizing mails sent via hand delivery (). Today’s ZIP code is 82225 which includes much of what once constituted Brawley Village including Weldon Road off Interstate 15 just south of town limits while portions lying inside Rialto Arena municipal boundaries continue to serve as zip code 72438
In 1853, Brawley was founded as a small town by Mormon settlers. It grew quickly, and in 1875 it became the first city in California. During the 1930s and 1940s, Brawley experienced some of the most significant population growth in California history. In 1945, Brawley was designated as the home of the United States Coast Guard Academy.
